Why, y'all are freeloading on other people's work and expense. You do realize that many of the degrees barely pay enough to justify the expense, right? In some cases, like with social work, it's an appallingly low rate of pay.

I've thought for years that a good next step would be to just index the student loan rates to the growth in wages. Better would be for the government to invest in education the way that it invests in bombing brown people in foreign countries, but indexing the interest to the increase in wages would be a huge step forward on that front.

@Matthew_Raymond You'll notice that they'll do it when the right wing is outraged, but they won't do it with things like the no fly list and NSA spying on random citizens. You can't prove that somebody is on the no fly list because it's not a publicly available list. But, because you can't prove that somebody is on the list, there isn't standing to file suit over it. Not that the liberal justices are necessarily that much better, but there used to be at least some effort to pretend like the constitution mattered when it was a more balanced court.

Those don't benefit society at large the way that the student loans so. Also, medical bills really should be, I'd be down with that. People hear about the underwater basket weaving and genders studies students and think that's all of it. The reality is that most of the degrees people are seeking are in things that benefit society as a whole. It's just that we've allowed the rich and uneducated to decide that the students should be saddled with the cost of the education that the rest of society benefits from.

@Yoseman1 None of the individuals in power have had the interest and willingness to do that. The last time I remember any significant raise in rates was under Reagan and it was still lower than what they were when he took office.

@pk7ghalm23 No, but the other reforms in the executive order did change the way that the payments were calculated to ensure that the people paying the loans had more income available after paying. They've also been adjusting the foregiveness programs that do exist and cleaning up the mess from when they were implemented in the first place. I do believe that far more is necessary as a good chunk of the degrees people are seeking are necessary for jobs that are essential to the functioning of our society.

@Ben-iz9ud BS, that's not what's happening in the vast majority of cases and you're showing your lack of education by saying that. When students pick a degree, they're likely doing so years before they'll be able to use it. Up to 12-15 years in the case of some advanced degrees. Good luck judging the state of the economy that far out. Also, just because one doesn't use the degree directly, does not mean that the studying isn't applicable to a different job. So many people these days have to retrain and having been trained in the first place does help.

Yes, but congress already approved the laws that he's using. They also decided to make the waivers tax free. It seems like congress did make a decision, it's just not one that right wing hacks like.

So, it's OK for you to free ride on the education that the students were stuck paying for? That seems awfully hypocritical to me.

Poor families get a lot of support in terms of federal grants and scholarships. It's mostly middle class families that are suffering in that fashion. Plus, even if it were true, that's still no excuse for why we're saddling students with the costs of education that everybody benefits from.
