@Ciridan Making the cable is one thing, but it requires a specialty ship to manage and those aren't cheap. It's part of the reason that elevators don't extend the full length of skyscrapers, the cabling to do that is massive and generally reserved for the freight elevator.

From what I understand, the protocols were based around the assumption that as long as the hull wasn't breached, that they'd be able to locate the sub and extract the passengers. Which appears to be a bit optimistic here. It's entirely possible that the sub won't ever be located as it is rather small and if it imploded after being moved by currents, it could be a challenge to find even that. More improbably things have happened, but at this point, I would expect a good outcome to be that they were able to retrieve the sub along with the bodies. Anything more seems like fantasy.

@ThugLifeBitches1 And they're almost certainly correct. You don't even need to be a submariner to know how long the odds of them still being alive is, let alone getting an appropriate rescue vessel into place and then extracted in time. And that's assuming that the vessel hasn't already imploded, you still have the issue of getting the sub to where you can work with it, decompressed and with an air supply before they all die. For all we know, they may already have decided that it wasn't possible and decided to spare themselves what is a very grim fate as the oxygen supply dwindles and carbon dioxide builds up.

@texasman7051 From what I've heard, even on successful dives, the text messages barely made it to the sub. So, it likely wouldn't take much to take that from very little to nothing. Even just a reduction in power to the communications gear due to issues with the power supply would likely do it.

@STho205 From what I understand, one of the failsafes was to hit a switch to drop the ballast and allow the sub to rise just on its own basic buoyancy. It's unclear if that failed, or if there was nobody to trigger it because of some other reason. (Chances are that if nobody tried, it's because the entire sub imploded, as anybody should have been able to hit the switch to drop the ballast)

@@user-in6pw5vf3t They definitely will be gasping for breath, their lungs will start to burn and they'll gasp for breath as the CO2 levels rise as CO2 levels are what trigger the body to gasp for breathe. If the CO2 were being removed and replaced by something other that oxygen, they wouldn't gasp, they would eventually just pass out as nothing would trigger the breathing when they passed out.

@JustSomePerson8 Not even remotely true, the lungs will burn, they'll gasp for breathe and eventually pass out and die if they aren't located and hooked up to some auxiliary source of oxygen before it's too late. If they're extremely lucky, they'll be able to be brought up to a safe depth and extracted using a rescue sub, but the likelihood of that gets less and less as time goes by and it's very possible that it's already impossible to do in time.

@@bav192 Yes, even if they are located, the sub potentially still has to be brought to the surface and they need to be decompressed while there's still oxygen left. Although, if the sub can be brought close enough to the surface, there are rescue subs that could likely manage the rest of it.

@margarita8442 There's the rub, assuming that they are indeed still alive, they don't have any way of knowing if they've been located with time to be extracted from the sub. This is like a real life example of one of those ethics dilemmas that people like to think about. They don't actually know if they're going to be rescued, and if they aren't going to be rescued, then offing themselves to preserve oxygen is just extending the suffering of the younger passengers. And, if they are rescued, they don't really know if the rescue is going to come a few minutes later, or if the sacrifice will make any difference. Plus, these are all wealthy people from what I can tell, they don't have any sort of morals or higher purpose, if they did, they wouldn't be so rich. The company owner might be the only one that isn't in that position, but also likely the only one that can keep things kind of in perspective as well. So, who knows.

From a clip I saw with one of the founders, they put a lot of their eggs in the hull basket, assuming that if anything else failed that they'd be able to retrieve the sub and extract the passengers in time to save everybody if something like this happened. I'm not sure what precisely happened, but if they can't locate the sub in time to extract the passengers, then it doesn't really matter that much if the hull was OK. It's arguably worse because 4 days being trapped before eventually asphyxiating in a particularly unpleasant way is one of the worst ways to go. It's up there with getting stuck in a cave and starving to death as rescuers try to figure out how to get you out, in terms of awful ends.

@mikebevan1034 Billionaires are more or less destroying the world, what about the millions that are at risk being some a-holes want to use money to set a high score? Nobody is so valuable as to be worth that much more than ordinary people.
