Most methods of power storage are going to naturally want to output DC power if you don't create additional circuitry. This is true whether it's an actual battery, you're moving water or sand up hill or using fluctuating heat to generate more electricity from that later on.

The main difference between AC and DC is that with AC the electrons vibrate in place and with DC the electrons move along the wire. So, presumably the minimum frequency for AC would be the point where you start to get electrons migrating from atom to atom. At that point, you're more or less just changing the polarity of the DC quickly rather than dealing in AC current.
