How Money Works

It became pretty much inevitable when the relevant taxes dropped so low. Better tax policy would either discourage such short term thinking, or at least not advantage it over longer term thinking. It's part of the problem when the taxes on short term investments are too low compared with capital gains taxes for things held longer. Even just requiring that stocks be held for a full year in order to get an advantaged rate can help, but with corporate tax rates going so low, it eats away at the benefit of holding for at least that year. Well-run businesses are typically going to have plans out a few years, even if they do have shorter term goals as well.

What's more, a lot of sit down restaurants have take out and delivery as options. It's mostly the higher end sit down restaurants that don't.

Mostly because of various corporations abusing their larger than appropriate influence over their markets. You've got companies in different sectors all using inflation as an excuse to jack their prices up as much as possible. The end result is that effectively the differences in price just get eaten away. If you get extra demand at the grocery store because restaurants are too expensive, prices get raised to deal with it. If the grocery stores are too expensive restaurants increase their prices to take advantage of that. But, because people have to eat, they wind up having to pay and the government hasn't done anything to break up any of the companies that are having too much of an influence on such prices.

@500ccRabbit It's greed, McDonalds has been moving away from being cheap and fast for quite a while. Compare the prices of McDonald's against Burger King and it's a pretty massive difference. If I use coupons, I can easily get an entire meal for well under $10 even now. And TBH, I'm not really sure that there's any real extra quality with McDonald's. the local BK has pretty good food for the price. It's not what I'd consider gourmet by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a very good value for the price. It's more inline with what the biggest local chains are charging.

They pretty much are in a lot of areas where the courts turn a blind eye to the fact that there's a lot of things like internet and cellphones where people are effectively required to have in order to participate in society, but the providers can put whatever abusive terms they like in there knowing that people really can't say no. It's the same thing with the illegal searches that are done at the airports. TSA does not have the right to pat people down or make them go through those invasive scanners to get on a plane. That's something that courts allowed even though there would normally need to be some form of probable cause in order for law enforcement to do so. Simply being out in public or driving isn't sufficient.

@michaeldougherty6036 There's a decent chance that they own the property they're operating on, which greatly reduces the risks. In that case, they mostly just have to make sure their food safety is up to scratch and that they've got properly trained staff.

@persomnus They could have had you all arrested for stealing, but that would have been a bit of an issue in terms of needing to get workers from some place else. For what a small portion of the cost of providing food at a restaurant the food component is, it probably should have just been policy that you get some for free or at a steep discount.

@diamondsmasher That often is the case, the same goes for the gas stations. They make practically nothing on the gas, and all of their profit on the stuff they sell inside. But, the oil company makes a ton while making people think that the gas station is.

@calvinware7957 Not really, there are a lot of poorly run companies out there that haven't built their profits into their business plan properly. But, they're mostly small and mid-sized businesses or ones being kept afloat by VC long enough to have a lock on the market.

Bars and pubs benefit from being able to subsidize the food with alcohol sales. What is absolutely damning though is that Burger King can still offer up a meal under $10 with coupons and the bigger local chains around here are somewhere in the middle for better food and profits that are mostly kept locally where it benefits the local economy.

They do, but the issue is that they started doing this before we started seeing significant inflation. They were doing it when inflation was like 2 or 3%. If I want to pay those prices, I can think of a lot of other casual dining restaurants that I'd go to with better food for the money.

@AJourneyOfYourSoul Yep and to be fair, their food is a lot better than at some of the other nationwide chains. Personally, I prefer to go to one of the local chains, it's about the same quality, and a lot less. But, part of what you're paying for at 5 guys is the ridiculous amount of options as everything is to order, they don't really have a default burger.

@veliskaya Is it? How does it work out when you just choose not to buy any food?
