  1. It's not just car manufacturers either. Harley Davidson has been doing that for years. At this point their cheapest new motorcycle is only $10k and they have nothing at all below that. By comparison many of the competitors have ones that are both half the price to get into the brand and more than just 2 basic product lines. Small cruisers and large baggers. One of the real issues in all of this is that customers can't exercise any real choice here if they are in area where they have to own a car other than what's on offer.

  2. I wouldn't even blame the marketers here, I'd blame the execs. The marketing department can only sell what they've been given to sell. Marketing is only a small portion of the issue here.

Just cutting more affordable options is somewhat better than also just jacking up the price being charged as at least if they cut the more affordable options the vehicles are in some way better. That's a similar position for people that don't have much money other than that those cars will filter down eventually. It's not like Breyers being roughly 30% air by volume and in the same size container as they used to sell.
