  2. They aren't. It was kind of cool a couple decades ago, but there are so many free media players that do it better now. And I mean free in basically every possible interpretation of the word.

  4. OSI is kind of a joke in that respect, there's a bunch of restrictions beyond what are reasonably necessary. That being said, in this case, it's not really open source if it doesn't come with the ability to fork the software. Being able to see the code is only part of what open source is aobut.

  6. The only reason to mess with the source at this point, is to more easily run it on modern OSes as a sort of historical oddity.

  7. They can't control people writing a set of patches to run on top of their code. Even Nintendo can't stop people from making and trading binary patches of their games. I doubt that WinAmp even has hat many attorneys.

  9. I remember it being great decades ago because of that. But, even the basic WMP has gotten pretty good and there's a ton of better programs that can handle more formats and work more efficiently. Sometimes software needs to be left in the past with Bonzi Buddy, Clippy and Bob.

  10. It was a couple decades ago, but I doubt that it's as good now, comparatively speaking, as it was when it was more or less the only option. Personally, I prefer Foobar2k , VLC and any number of other media players depending on what I'm doing. I think the last time I thought about Winamp was when Wesley Willis died and only because he's the one that came up with the whole catch phrase.

  11.  @Reichstaubenminister  And, ironically, it's less free than BSD and MIT licensed software in that respect. But, either way, just being able to look at code isn't something that most people would consider to be open source.

  12. I have a few issues with VLC, but it's one of the media players that I regularly use. I just wish they wouldn't have features in that don't work, and don't seem to ever get fixed. The custom bookmarks feature still seems to be completely non-functional in terms of being able to save between plays, which makes it more or less completely pointless.
