From what I can tell, calling them cannon fodder is being too kind. Some of them were sent across an open field wearing uniforms that do not blend in with snow for no discernible reason.

@braxxian In modern times yes, but in the past you would have kings showing up to lead their troops.

@billywitt Yes, in this case, they're probably there for whatever it is that Russia has agreed to give North Korea for their efforts. They're there more or less as mercenaries. Except, that any of them that do survive are unlikely to get any real payment when they get back.

@pcatful Yes, although there are degrees. I'm sure when my great uncle was invading during D-Day that he had a fairly good idea what he was there for. My Dad in Vietnam didn't have that same luxury. Not that it really matters, because the larger scale conflict is just not relevant to what's going on at that moment when you just have this one objective to deal with while trying not to become a casualty.
