@chibicitiberiu Because if they couldn't do that, then nobody would be offering features that depended upon 3rd party code. From what I've read here, the affected devices are over 10 years old, meaning that they've been EOL for many years and who knows how many of them are even functioning at this point. That's well above and beyond what people should be expecting of this sort of hardware.

@perwestermark8920 Perhaps, but how many years should that encompass, and how much would customers pay to make that so? For enough money, companies could keep these products working pretty much forever. I doubt many people would pay the thousands of dollars per unit that would cost though.

@cutterboard4144 Everybody does though because writing all this stuff from scratch has a lot of expense involved and the result may or may not be any better. For a while, pretty much every network connected computer in the world used the FreeBSD TCP/IP stack. That may still be the case, but without the advertising clause it's harder to know for sure. That being said, I do think that features like this should be segregated into their own modules and downloaded by the user separate from the base installation because of things like this.

I wouldn't, the power cost alone would pay for a proper NAS over time anyways.
