I tend to agree with you here. There was a period of my life where I was working 12 hour days 3 days a week, which left me 4 days off. I would meditate for about a half and hour 4 times a day working on my ability to focus. I got pretty good after a while and I had the kind of focus that I'd previously only seen with the teacher of meditation that I learned from. It didn't last because I'm an ADDer and maintaining a life where I could set aside the time was no longer possible because I quit my job because I was sick of being mistreated. But, it was kind of cool because I could see the managers doing it realizing that I was largely immune to negativity coming from them and would not be moved by it at all.

It's unfortunate that so many people don't realize that you can broadly break meditation techniques up into ones that develop mindfulness and ones that develop focus and concentration. Being mindful can be very useful, but so can the ability to maintain focus on a single point as if it's the only thing in the world. ADDers tend to be good at the single pointed focus, provided it is the thing that we are hyperfocused on right now. We're typically not so good at directing that focus to other places and keeping it there.
