There are a lot of forms of meditation. I think that methods that involve movement and touching things are an easier fit. I personally like stacking rocks and singing bowls as they don't require much focus to start, but as you progress through it, the focus will come. The though of just sitting there for 20 minutes can be a tough sell, even sitting there for a minute can be a bit of an issue. Also, I do think that meditations that are more focused on unsticking the focus and redirecting it are probably more helpful than ones that are based on focus alone. We don't generally have issues with focus, we are more likely to have issues with directing the focus to things that we need to be focused on to get our stuff done.

It's probably because you were either doing the wrong meditations, or you were trying to do too much at once. A minute every hour or two is a legitimate place to start and should still give you some results. You're usually better off with increasing frequency rather than duration in terms of the benefits of meditation.

If you're going to listen to music, it's really supposed to be more like elevator music that you're not really going to pay attention to. This is one of the reasons why muzak didn't typically have any singing, it was meant to be in the background to cover the tension of being in an elevator with people you don't know.
