I used to live in the back country during my summers during high school. We had a massive gravity feed system that could handle 5 gallons at a time. The water would feed through multiple rather large filters before coming out a regular faucet like you might use for a garden hose. The main thing that I like about my ceramic pump filter is that it's comparatively fast and I don't need to go through the hassle of finding a place to hang it. I can't remember what filter I had before that, but it came with a bag that could be hung so that you could just fill the bag with water and let gravity do the work.

That's what I always did. At least after filters became more accessible. I can't remember the model I used when I started, but it was kind of cool in that I could remove the canister and attach some included hoses to gravity feed into my bottle.

If you choose wisely, some pump filters can be gravity fed.

That's definitely true. Typically, the water around here is pretty clean, and clear, you wouldn't be filtering anything that's not if you had a choice. It's still got the potential for parasites and the like, but there's not much to filter out other than pathogens. A filter can last rather a long time before clogging.

You're supposed to empty them out when not in use and IIRC, there's a part that's included to help keep it open so that it completely dries.
