LOL, I was just thinking the same thing. One of the nice things about external frames is that you get much better ventilation. That being said, they can be a little bit annoying in terms of catching on things while out, so something that's a bit of a hybrid would probably be appreciated. External frame packs are also kind of nice because if you've got other gear that you need to lug around once you get to your campsite, you can usually detach the bag itself and lash things directly the the frame a la packboard. Which when I think about it, would probably be a great alternative.

@morgan4373 That is sound advice. I remember being most of the way through a 20 mile one day through hike when I had a back spasm. It was my own fault for not having my stuff adequately balanced, but more focus on how I was using the pack and the comfort likely would have prevented that from happening.
