In all fairness, the 3/5 compromise is somewhat less racist than people make it out to be. The racist part is that people were allowed to be owned as slaves on the basis of their race. The 3/5 compromise was a foot in the door towards giving them full constitutional rights. Admittedly, that's cold comfort for anybody that was living as a slave at the time, but it's not like the Northerners didn't get anything out of compromising there. It was more or less just the best they could do and it lasted less than 90 years.

@blakekaveny Was there ever a universe where they would? If the compromise didn't go through, we would have likely wound up with 2 countries and who even knows when slavery would have been abolished as there wouldn't have been a civil war that was largely focused on it.
