Not really, they were trying to get Democracy. They didn't have a strong democracy that had a history to really look at. It wasn't until after WWII that they finally achieved a generally stable democracy.

That's what happen when you have a uni-party, the elites don't really care which it is, because they'll be OK either way. The people didn't get to choose Trump's opponent. Had Biden been primaried, we likely would have wound up with a different nominee with positions that people understood and wanted. It took weeks for Harris to even announce what her positions were going to be when Biden finally dropped.

Once SCOTUS said that Trump had to be on the ballot in CO, it was pretty much all over in terms of invoking the 14th amendment to prevent him from running. Theoretically, he should be barred from holding the office, but SCOTUS is unlikely to actually respect the constitution on that issues.

@Fr00stee Yes, the primaried LBJ and while that didn't work out due to them losing to Nixon, LBJ likely would have lost to Nixon as well, but at least there was a period where the Democratic Presidents couldn't take running again for granted if they didn't still have the support of the voters.

@John-Smith02 I agree, Harris would never have been the VP if Biden hadn't promised to choose a woman of color for VP.
