Federal agencies, that doesn't necessarily mean that there aren't state laws that might apply to this and the dealers may be in trouble as well.

That's a point I hadn't considered. WA has a few spots were they've got odometer checks on the freeways. If your odometer is correct, it should turn over a the same time that you hit the appropriate next mark. If not, your speedometer might also be off by some amount.

Rolling back odometers is often illegal under state law as well and can come back to haunt dealerships if they don't check for it. I wouldn't be surprised if this discourages dealerships from accepting Teslas as trade ins, just to avoid having to worry about whether they're themselves on the hook.

This whole thing is kind of weird because normally, the odometer and the speedometer are linked, so that if your odometer is off your speedometer will be as well. Around here there are a few places on the freeway with odometer checks, you see what your odometer reads and there's another mark every tenth of a mile or so. It's done in part to help people know if their speedometer is working properly

@mangmerciless9606 The shares are doing pretty well right now, which makes me wonder who it is that's buying all the shares knowing that it was massively overpriced to begin with and that sales in many regions have fallen off a cliff.

@ecousins4209 I'm fairly sure that this is illegal under state law in many places. I think the most likely consequence here if it's really happening is that dealers are going to be even less inclined to accept Teslas as trade ins.

@user-yx3tl7pv3j He may, but keep in mind that many states do have their own set of laws with respect to odometers and potentially the dealers could be at risk if there's been odometer fraud. Even if they aren't themselves liable, it's just another reason for them to not want to accept Teslas as trade ins.
