IIRC, it was double pneumonia that led to sepsis. All they had to go by was that the man wasn't showing an appropriate emotional response, and we know now that he's autistic, hence the lack of typical affect.

There's also the issue that he's autistic and his failure to respond with adequate emotion led prosecutors to look for something to put him away for.

@DAnne-hd4cc They also didn't know that he was autistic at the time, and that may well have been part of what convinced them to go for the death penalty rather than some sort of super-long prison term.

@KingPossum Yes and I assume that they're probably understaffed and the room hadn't been rented for those days. But, somebody definitely did screw up as there shouldn't be anybody still occupying the room if it hasn't been extended and there should be some sort of computer system to let them know that the key hasn't been changed either.

@bobmazzi7435 That aspect does make some sense if they're understaffed, but I'm not sure why they didn't notice that nobody had checked out.
