I agree, it's not like you can't get a proper microphone that is light enough to hold comfortably for some period of time. A lav isn't even that hard to wear, assuming that you don't need for it to be hidden. A loop and a clip and it's on. Apart from a quick sound check to see if there's too much noise in the area, I don't see any purpose in ever recording while handholding a lav, and even then, it doesn't make much sense as it should be held where you're planning on wearing it.

@harduphiker Why not just clip it to your collar the way that lavs are intended to be worn? It doesn't take much time to clip and unclip it, but you get the sound that it's intended to capture. That being said, I doubt anybody really cares that much unless they're really into this stuff. Although, it can hurt a bit in terms of new viewers seeing it and deciding that the same lack of attention to detail is going to show up elsewhere.

@mjodr Precisely. Not to mention that mics are designed to be positioned in specific places, so if you're holding a lav, you're probably not getting the intended sound quality anyways.

@mjodr Yep, it's not something that goes without saying because most people have no reason to know that. Different mics are meant to be used in different ways and for different purposes. If that wasn't the case, there's no way any movie studio would approve having so many different options. There may be some niche purposes where deliberately using the wrong ones makes sense, but it's just that niche.
