When I was a teen, I had a Summer job working at the construction site of a new train station. Yes, that was in the mid-1800s. :-) Our job was insulating the large steam pipes that went to the platforms. One day, one of those pipes exploded at a bend. My two colleagues were caught between the pipe and the wall, and the steam made it impossible for them to get oriented enough to get out from there. The boss eventually got them out, but both died within 24 hours from their burns. I was burned also, and my back felt like it was on fire. So I imagine that before they were sedated, the guys must have suffered horribly.
When I was two my babysitter (back in the early 1800s) was making fries in a shallow pan and because I was out-of-control curious when I was a kid the sizzling got my attention and while trying to climb the stove I hit the handle and the grease splashed onto my neck. All I remember for the next few months was screaming like hell, running down the hall, peeing my pants and passing out. Don't remember a single hospital visit for skin grafts. So although such experiences are traumatic and extremely painful at the time, they often only last for a short period, even if it doesn't feel like it. I had two knee injuries i the past few years that hurt more than anything else I've experienced and lasted much longer. Every time I think of the practice of kneecapping, my knees hurt! A short while ago, my sister asked if I was accident-prone. 🤣
