A 1% death rate assuming 100% of the population is infected would have resulted in 3 million deaths in the United States and 400,000 deaths in Canada. Even with breakthrough infections and waning efficacy, the vaccines have saved lives. If you look back at the Spanish Flu, that pandemic had a death toll of at least 50 million. So far, we are at 6 million deaths. I would suggest that public health measures and the vaccines have helped.
