The character, to me, is like a backslide into a sort of Velikovskian, maybe even Fichtean ("[No] morbid self-attention [...] become a person like other People") portrayal of his return to "Reality" from after his stint in Vietnam. Perhaps a calling out of people's alleged "disposability" to the causes of society [eg., the city].
