Tell us why you reckon the Fokker DR1 Triplane was 'superior' (55 sec) to the Sopwith Tripehound: After all, ' tho the differences weren't great: The Sopwith was slightly faster, had a slightly higher ceiling & a bit more range. Their excellent manouverability was pretty much the same, structural strength about as bad and the Tripe's motor was far more reliable. Admittedly the Tripe was by all accounts a pig for the riggers to work on, but still.

Nah - He was the one plugging the wonders of the DR1 for its agility. It was the rest of the Stafffel who prefered the speed, ressilience & heavier armament of the Albatross.

@hodaka1000 Well that's put me right on one point - I thought the DR1 had a single machine gun like the Tripehound which it copied. But later versions certainly had two and quite likely so did the early ones. But whilst what you say about Von Richtofen later championing of the DR7 rings true, I'm still pretty certatin I've come across multiple references to his staffle being pretty hacked off about his insistence DR1s were superior to the readily available Albatross.
