@MRtapio5 The territory has been stolen by Finnish aggression towards Russia in 1918. Long story short: Russian Empire saved Finns from Sweden occupation, guarantee their autonomy, saved their language and culture, gave best military education to people like Mannerheim, then Empire collapsed. Autonomous territories got their full freedom, attacked the weak 2 months old socialist republic with the assistance of Germans in 1918, meanwhile killing all russians and red Finns in concentration camps. 1938 allied with Nazis so they could help them get even more land but Molotov pact destroyed their hopes. Meanwhile USSR asked Finland to exchange lands near Leningrad for twice as more in in Karelia. They refused. As the history clearly showed if not for those land Soviets got during 1939 war Leningrad would be exterminated like Nazis planned.

You still don't get it? They called these territory Russia and its citizens Russians. It is like asking European expedition forces to distinguish native Americans or asking them to call Africans according their tribe names.

Ukranians have been shelling Donetsk since the start. Killing thousands. People sit without electricity, water, in freezing buildings. Aren't people from Donetsk ukranians too?
