The countries that made longer barrel version of previous cal guns instead of immediately going to a bigger cal asap tended to increase the number of barrels compared to the previous ship whereas the countries that went bigger gun tended to keep same or even lose barrel numbers. The US Wyoming and Russian Gangut for example that had 12" guns with 50 or more calibers instead of going to a bigger bore like the British 13.5" had 12 guns, whereas the 13.5" British ships had 10 guns. When Britain went from 13.5" ships to 15" it went down from 10 to 8 guns, US 14" ships went up from 10 to 12 guns then went to 50 caliber 14" guns.
