While in the various 1600s wars like English Civil war and the various Anglo-Dutch wars the colonies weren't very involved the colonies were fairly heavily involved in the French and Indian war/7 years war and many of the leaders of the continental navy during the Revolution were veterans of the French and Indian war. So you can probably argue the proto USN dates back to the French and Indian war while still British colonies, but I would definitely agree with Drach that you can't like claim it goes all the way back to Jamestown or some such.

  4. For it's "take on 2 conventional battleships" roll would the Yamatos have been better off with Montana's armament of 12 16s where you could have a 4 gun salvo minimum on both ends? Also do you think 4 triples Montana or 3 quads Alsace layout would be better if you did the 12 gun thing.

  5.  @Ent1610  well I'm sure for such a sell at any price to happen the Germans would have to offer something that the Japanese wanted(maybe Graf Zeppelin so the Kidō Butai could have another carrier) in addition to whatever money. Also it would definitely have to happen before 12/7 otherwise it gets sunk by Force H somewhere near Gibraltar on its way there if they try it after war were declared.
