  3. Motor City Mechanic did a great series on checking, troubleshooting testing with various different tools. It's at least a five part video because he breaks it down by different areas. The end result was going in and replacing valves that had been bent and all the steps to do the head and valve. A great series for a PT guy like I am. Someone that knows the steps he uses can probably bypass many of the steps, but it is very useful for it's lessons on troubleshooting and the ways to use the test equipment. While this one had a defective timing belt, the one he did was sort of surprising, but came down to a previous mechanic not paying attention to details. So many mechanics will just tell customers that a PT needs a new engine or something that is obviously too expensive to justify. That means there are a bunch for sale cheap and like mine, can be returned to their glory without breaking the bank, IF you are able to do the work. I'm no mechanic, but have tackled jobs on all my cars because of youtube channels like Ray's Repairs.

You normally have excellent camera coverage and angles, I don't really know how you accomplish that without seeing through the camera, but when the angle is slightly off, like looking down into the door panel, I find myself turning my phone screen in all sorts of angles as if it will help me see any better. 😆 That's how absorbed I am into your videos.

  6. I've been patiently waiting for the next video to come out. Your work bench reminds me of my work benches over the years. I had a radio repair shop for 14 years and customers would come in and out of the repair portion. Sometimes It was down right embarrassing to have to shove stuff precariously off to the side in order to put their equipment on the bench. As a one man technician shop, I always had multiple jobs going on. I tried to keep shelves in order to put my work back up while it waited for parts or to be worked on again, but my tools and test equipment would always be strewn across my bench. When I took a down day and organized them all, it sure felt good, but didn't last too long. I tried to get people that I hired from time to time to organize it for me, but that didn't work out. I guess my suggestion is to knock off the work an hour earlier and just clean and organize the bench and shop. It seems like there never is the time and customers, family and making money come first, but keeping an organized bench will have a good effect on you personally and actually help speed things up. Being retired, if I was close by, I would volunteer my time to help organize and clean up behind you. I know some may not like this comment, but I would really hate to see you burn yourself out. I can't imagine how you do everything that you presently do. You are the top YouTuber in my opinion.

  11. I'm amazed at how much you know about so many vehicles. I'm sure you have worked on many of them, multiple times, but when you get an unfamiliar one, you pretty much make sense of how it's operating and your way around the engine. I've seen parts that I had no idea even existed and in some strange places, since watching your channel.

  12. Really glad you have a handle on this. Being in business for 14 years doing radio repairs, my wife unit, despite my worst efforts, tried to keep us in a level or better playing field. I was the tech/salesperson and for me it was all about the job. I could not grasp the overall picture with profit margins and such. We really struggled for many years, I did a lot of business and worked all the time, but when the business was sold and I went to work for a company and a regular pay check, we did okay, not because of the profit margins the business had, but the word of mouth and goodwill we had built up. Of course people don't like spending money and often ran a tab, authorized by us or just because they couldn't pay at the time, but most of the people realized that I did good and honest work for them and always spoke good of me to this day. I would have done much better if I had the grasp of the business as you are revealing in this video. I really wish you well in the future and hope you prosper.

  13. Plus his video is in focus, even in the oddest positions. I really don't know how he keeps things centered, when he can hardly see the camera screen. Also, his audio is great. Does he use a 🎙️ or is this all an attribute of the camera. Constantly sharing his thoughts is great too. Other YouTube mechanics tend to fade in and out in the audio and the camera and focus work really varies. Many other YouTubers, I get tired of watching, often in silence, while the focus goes in and out. I'm envious of his skills. I attempt to do videos of my mechanical stuff and luffa sponges growing, but just don't have the voice and the proper camera for it. I've recently been breathing life back into my Sony camcorder and a new tripod, but it's still not as good.

  14. A couple videos ago, I was watching with my earbuds in, but had some work to do with the chickens, so I was only listening. Because Ray's commentary is so good, I experience a whole other level. Without watching, I could have collected quite a few of Ray's sayings, comments, musings. They would make a great collection of sound bytes.😊

  16. I was wondering about that too. So many are designed with the intake higher than the engine. I can't imagine this would handle crossing much water without it getting sucked into the engine.

  17. Watching this in bits and pieces. I am practicing all the stuff I learned from Ray and not letting different jobs intimidate me. If I take it bit by bit and remove things in the proper order, it makes more sense. Random info on my comments. YouTube favors sites that have two way conversations and activity. So putting a comment if anything, preferably not causing trouble, helps promote the channel's standings.

  18. At 30:46 I had to go back and look. The forward bracket on the window came out with the window, but it went back in without the forward bracket attached to the glass. I'm sure you get it figured out, but the suspense is killing me and afforded me an opportunity to join in with my 2 cents. 😆

  19. Beyond the years of experience, I wonder how Ray got so knowledgeable about the scanner and all the different points and readings. It seems like there must have been classes or studying going on to be so prolific in knowing what each point means and what it should be. I've learned a lot about O2 sensors over the last few years since first chasing an issue with my Kia. Since then through YouTube videos and listening to various people explaining their operation, I have a pretty good understanding. But that's only one point is a full scan. There is a lot to understand there.

  20. While my background is in electronic repairs, watching your videos has helped me be more confident in taking on jobs. My refrigerator quit two days ago. Under my Home warranty plan, I would be waiting for two weeks to get Sears here and still pay $75 deductible. I decided to jump into the repair and find some Rainman equivalent YouTubers to watch. That made it pretty basic and simple. I'm glad I jumped into it myself. It turned out to be a broken wire due to a rodent chewing the wire to the compressor's starter relay. A quick soldering to the wire and it's working fine today and saved me $75.

  22. Looks like that drain plug allows for a rubber tubing to be added on and direct the flow out, rather than just running all over the bumper and randomly dripping into the pan or the floor. Just curious if your fluid exchanger can handle fluids 140 degrees or more, like the coolant?

  23. I'm gonna get my mechanic fix again today. My grandson is bringing the PT Cruiser home via AAA again. The radiator hose blew 30 miles away from home. Plus the valve cover gaskets came in yesterday, but it's forecast to rain today. At least I have this video to fall back on until after the rains.

  24. I began doing what he does. I used to worry about it and still couldn't remember where bolts and nuts went. Lately I've done a number of in depth jobs that might take me a week or so to start putting things back together. I've only got a small leftover parts bin.😊 My grandson, just graduated from aircraft mechanic school and it drives him crazy that I don't make little stick it notes or labels and set each thing aside. That's a good work habit if he's fixing a plane, but I'll chance it on my own car.

  25. For some reason yesterday, YouTube delivered video after video of auto lift fails. Various ways that cars fell off the lift or it broke. Always glad to see how safe you are with using your lifts.

  27. I have tuned into a lot of mechanic videos and Ray's filming is right on. His audio is spot on and he has a pleasant voice that is easy to listen to. Plus he has developed the gift of gab over time. Early videos were more of a monotone explanation of what he was doing and expecting to do. Lately, he talks about a lot of different subjects, and touches on many unrelated to the job at hand. It's kind of like spending the day sitting in his shop and just talking story between each other, but it's only him. Sort of like the old show Taxi and reminds me of an elderly retired man in San Fransisco, whose day revolved around sitting at his friends shop and talking or maybe helping his friend clean the shop.

  30. My thought was using an easy out instead of the drill bit to see if you can grab it and unthread it. I may be speaking too early, as I have not finished watching this yet. One thing about replacing the line is no possible metal shavings contaminating the system. But like you, I try most anything except waiting to fix a problem.

  31. Great road trip to take the wife unit along or at least a dog unit. Luna seems pretty laid back. My dog Butch can't wait to get in a car and stare at me for hours, once in awhile looking outside it sniffing the fast food joints. He loves Starbucks and the pup cup of whipped cream they always give him.

  32. It's fixed in my mind that valves get changed each time. I don't have an assortment of replacements like Ray, but I'm not a shop and only work on my three cars. But I did invest in various other kits of screws, O rings, plastic clips for the car panels. On my wish list is first and foremost a lift in my garage, but also smoke machines, ac recovery machine. So many things I would recover the cost of in home repairs. My PT Cruiser front end, steering and brake replacement is nearing its end this weekend. Yeah.

  34. I always love valve cover gasket replacements. Something satisfying about having a clean engine with no further leaking oil. My PT project just expanded to the rear. New calipers, pads and rotors, new sway bar links and a set of shims to correct the camber that is not to specs. As well as camber adjustment bolts for the front. I'm determined to get the alignment as close as possible before it goes to final alignment. Hopefully that will be done and operational in a week or so after parts arrive and I can finally do my Kia Sportage valve cover gaskets, which leak slowly, right on the exhaust, giving a burning oil smell. I can't wait to do the valve cover gasket.😊

  35. 9:28 I was wondering where your rotary cleaning tool was. I was impressed by it when I first saw you use it. I've since added the pads like you are using, but didn't get a rotary tool. You would use it way more than I would. Just one of those tools that's nice to have when you need it.

  36. Also, as I learned from Ray, the oil will migrate back with the force of the wind and fans, as the car is driven. My Kia is a good example of this. The leak or leaks are high up and in the front, but the bottom and back are full of oil. I wish there was an easier way to degrease the engine and make it nice and shiny, so I could look for the leak. I just learned about the dye they use in oil to look for the leaks, similar to the ac dye method. I wonder how well that works?

  37. As an owner of a PT Cruiser, this video does hit my reward center. Nice to see different ways to approach these repairs. On mine I removed the front grille and support bars to get to the radiator and it seems like there were less steps than all this. Next summer I may be back in for an ac compressor change and will remove the front to get to it all.

  40. My 2004 Dodge Dakota I bought new and got a 12 year warranty. That really paid off, from rear end to the whole air conditioner, over the 12 years I had many big ticket items changed. The hard part is dealerships lock you into fulfilling all services as they say are necessary and done by then, which on an island like Maui, I didn't have many choices anyways. Those services I had to have done were pretty darn expensive. So I saved on one hand and lost in another. I still have the truck and have done most of my own work over the last few years. It will hand down to my grandson with barely 100k miles on it.

  42. The PT was made by Chrysler, the engineer moved to Chevrolet and designed the HHR station wagon looking PT. I have no idea if the issues also followed or it was designed better that the PT. The SS is like a sporty truck version, I think from Chevy. I've rarely seen one, but recently there was a really cherry one on a used car lot. I looked it over and got to sit inside. I didn't care for the visibility from the driver's seat. And with a V8, I would probably wreck it. I do like the look, but not for functionality, just for fun. The other ss I've seen have been driven by older gentlemen like myself. But they are rare to see here in Virginia, but PT Cruisers abound.

  46. I bought a plastic repair kit, basically a soldering iron with a flat tip and a bunch of medal staple things to reinforce the break. I've used it a bunch already.

  47. Is Luigi saying the broken clip is easily replaced or the whole connector? I've never seen replacement clips for connectors and even doubt you could find some. All these plastic parts get brittle and break. Zip tie or silicon, doesn't matter to me if it keeps the connector in place. Maybe point it out to me for future reference, but I would be surprised if a connector didn't break.

  49. I was thinking that maybe a set of drop down hoses, that can be attached to the exhaust pipe of the cars and are vented outside of the building, might be a good addition. I realize it comes down to money and ease, when you can and do run a bunch of fans to move the air, but considering the heat factor in your shop and just the overall air quality, maybe it could improve conditions when troubleshooting involves long run times on vehicles.
