They nearly got it but are still clinging on to the dream of defeating Russia. My guess is Trump says no more aid, because Ukraine is not actually important to the USA. The Europeans admit they can't do anything, the Zelensky regime collapses in a coup and a more pro Russian government makes peace with Putin. This is when the USA can help induce a more favourable settlement using carrots rather than sticks.
