Wagner was always an offshoot of the GRU. They performed the same deniable operations that PMCs like Blackwater perform for American intelligence. They operated in Ukraine alongside the Donbass militias but now Donbass is part of Russia they had to be disbanded - against Prighozin's wishes. That problem solved itself like the recent incident with Zaluzhny's aide in Ukraine. The former members are now mainly part of the Russian national guard and some have joined the Chechen militia.
