They are advancing from Bakhmut as well as Marinka. Both were very well defended and really had to be taken. But the main aim of last year was defeating the Ukrainian summer offensive. This has removed a large number of Ukrainian troops from the battle field, destroyed the western supplied equipment and shown it to be no more effective that the Russian equivalent. The Russians have done their best to preserve their men and I think they are happy with a creeping attritional advance until there is either a military or political collapse in Ukraine. I think the total Ukrainian mobilization when it's obvious there is no chance of winning will provide the catalyst for that.

@themcgeachys The Chechens and Donbas militias also took a major role. In fact the actual Russian army has not been committed to a great extent yet. I suspect they are being held in reserve to occupy Ukraine or in case NATO gets directly involved.

@paulmasterson386 "What are they waiting for?". I submitted an answer and it seems to have been removed. So short answer, time is on Russia's side.

Plenty of happy talk from the prof. Reality is that the Ukrainian air defence is on the verge if total collapse and Russia has thousands of missiles to fire. They are systematically destroying any indigenous arms production. Also systematically destroying command and control sites which also likey host NATO officers. F16s will make no difference.

@paulmasterson386 That's a pretty low bar for a tank or IFV. Actually much of it was so protective it didn't even want to leave the barracks apparently 🤣. They were hyped up as game changing wonder weapons but were nothing of the sort. Taurus and F16 will be the same.

@paulmasterson386 Why have the Russians not committed their main force yet? I think they needed to build it up and break down the Ukrainian ability to fight. Also they needed to weather the sanctions and crank up arms production to 11. Meanwhile they know it's election year for Ukraine's supporters, USA and here in the UK, I think Germany too. They knew the war would become unpopular as it dragged on and the public could see what a total waste of money it was. Biden even blew up the German gas pipeline - great PR 😂

@margaritaeglington7522 Thanks very much for that and I am British (just translated your post). I've been very sceptical of our involvement in this conflict, I can't see how it is any of our business.

@paulmasterson386 True, if they can build them unhindered. However without weapons they are just sitting ducks. Also it assumes they have manpower and logistics to maintain them. And finally that there is still a government in Kiev wanting to fight on.
