Don't romantice the hardship of peasants . they live like that because ALL their kids legged it to the cities for better paying jobs so they would not have to suffer this. YES even boring 10 hour shifts in a factory are prefered by people all over the word over the country life of poor farmers / peasants

@peaceleader7315 what do you mean, by: 'the government made policy?' it's the normal state all over the world that developing countries don;t have top notch pension plans. that's just a luxury only the richest countries can afford, no matter what kind of government they have. Even in Europe and the USA it's a relative new thing to have, a post war social development. Before we too had to rely on children and churches to provide for the elderly

except that their heavy factory industry pollutes the whole country (just outside your view) although they do make progress , it's still a big problem. and some of the progress is only on paper, because of local corruption

@noname-zj5kf sorry I cannot read Chinese. edit: I put it through google translate. thank you for your nice reply and suggestion. I now used Baidu maps, it has a lot more compared to google, but still mostly the big cities. And it supports the view I had of a country with modern shiny parts and dusty old parts

@Leo-dr6hi what do you think I have been doing? I checked tons of them... btw none of china except Hong Kong is featured on streetview, so at best you get a few random 360 photo shots made by a local or a tourist, which are usually places of interest and not ordinary streets with no features.

@idioticwisdom264 not really, in western rural towns, the farmers have milk robots and drones and combine harvesters full of computers

Are you in Groningen? Dutch people are known for being quite outgoing and in your face, we are much less reserved than our neighbours. Those oldtimers live without their (most like just one because of 1 child policy back in the day) children who all went to the city to escape their hardship life. So they never see anybody and are probably happy when anybody young shows up to talk to for a change.

@peaceleader7315 people, stop being so ignorant AND EDUCATE YOURSELF. China has 1.4 billion people (even if official statistics are inflated they are with more than a billion for sure.) Only a few hundred million have middle class life in those shiny new cities, 800 million are still dirt poor. MANY of those are pensioners because of their 1 child policy in the 20th century. The party doesn't have enough money to pay western level pensions to half a billion people

@peaceleader7315 what happened is that machinery took over the back breaking work that for millenia had to be done by illiterate peasants and their children. so now those children can get an education and a more fulfilling life. (obviously it also depends on other hundreds of other factors and a modern society creates new problems) , but in general our lives now are much better, longer and and healthier.

@binyang7076 if one million people died from smoking in the past, do you say " ha I'll keep smoking because they did it too!" Or do you say, we know better now, let's be healthy.... And yes, you are right, the average westerner buys too much
1
(to americans in general:) stop buying it. yes I know it takes way more effort to buy healthy stuff and it's probably more expensive, but you claim to live in a country of freedom and free choice, it will only change if more of you make better choices. If your health is important to you, you can invest in it.

@JAM661 finally somebody who knows the truth, thank you, the ignorance of most commenters is mindboggling

@peaceleader7315 capitalist economic system is the only good system that works and ALL innovation comes from it. No other system works. Your phone or computer you use to read this, was made by capitalism. As is every other device in your house. BUT you need to have a government that has a little control over the capitalist business. In Europe they do that better than in the USA, so the rich european countries have a better quality of life . because the government controls healthcare and pensions etc better than in the USA But don't fool yourself, Europe's best countries are still build on capitalism!!

@peaceleader7315 the biggest cost would be climate change.

@peaceleader7315 if you had read carefully you could have seen that I already acknowledge the fact that excess greed is a bad thing, by saying that european countries have better control of their capitalist economies than for example a more harsh capitalist country like the USA. the Dutch and Danes and Norwegians and Swiss are not greedy people, they are among the happiest people in the world ;. they work less and have more free time to spend with their friends and family or to do other things to develop themselves. like travel or study another language or dance or read books. Or just enjoy a free walk in the park. they are not obsessed materialists, but they enjoy the fruits of technology. Have a nice day yourself and don;t cloud your mind with whatever "ism" cult affected your somber worldview.

@peaceleader7315 I do think about the rest of the world. I just read Steven Pinker's book 'Enlightenment Now' an ode to progress all OVER THE WORLD, not just in the rich parts. Almost ALL nations in Africa make good steps, educating more women , having better access to medicine and other care, having cheaper solar energy, access to knowledge on smartphones etc etc. the world is less grim than you think. look nobody says they are there yet, but they move in the right direction. in a faster rate than the west did in the previous century. The population grow is also slowing down, because educated women have less children and better health means you don't need to have 8 to hope 3 will survive.

@rosalynnchow5057 my grandmother was active with social contacts, family, gardening, volunteering in the church and in local events up till 91 years of age. But she also had a generous pension and 1st class healthcare, to help her with hearing aids, surgery ( a new hip) etc etc. Things that most of these folks won't get when they need it. She is 96 years old now, and now she indeeds need full time care in an old folks home, but that would be the same in China or any other country.
