  1.  @8cyl6speed  your overtake argument is nonsense, in a lot of europe they have higher speed limits than in north america, and plenty of europeans drive all over europe, same distances as usa. Also a modern turbocharged 4 cylinder from Europe or Japan is often faster than bigger american cars, not to mention electric cars which are much faster in acceleration. But your hauling trailers argument is valid. Europeans typically use vans for that , and americans use a pickup truck with a trailer. YUUUUUUP!

And my criticism is not towards any individual soviet car, but towards the system, full of bureaucracy and corruption and neglect, all together making the end product a lot worse. If you got a decent build car in eastern europe, and took good care of it, it could be a joyful possession of course, for many years.

  12.  @joeo.4546  I am not american, you are right, the deciding factor was always the industry of america. The Germans had better weapons at first (though by 1945 the americans had caught up) but never enough resources to produce enough. Stalin had not much except space and people. He needed a lot of foreign (USA) aid to build up the defense and later offence against Hitler. Russians winning the war is Putin propaganda that reached a lot of european kids for some reason. BTW I am saying this as somebody who is very critical of the USA, I think it's a horrible country at the moment. but you DID win WW2 and freed many european and asian countries. (of course with help of many other nations, before I get an angry Aussie on my back)

  13. In my opinion the Malaise Era of the American car never ended. They have been in it for more than 40 years now. I would enjoy owning a fifties or sixties classic, but have absolutely no desire to drive in anything later from that country.

  14.  @baddog9320  good grief, how ignorant can you be. 5-cylinder engines have been around a long time. Henry Ford first tinkered with them back in the late 1930s. Fast forward to 1974 and Mercedes has put a 5-cylinder diesel in their 300D. Jump forward 2 years (1976) and Audi has introduced the first gas-powered inline 5 in the Audio 100, the beginnings of a relationship that lasts to today (though with some bumps and gaps along the way). In fact, along with Volvo, the 5-cylinder is forever linked with Audi. Since Audi’s initial success with the 5-cylinder, seemingly ever manufacturer has introduced their own version at some point: Volvo in 1991, Volkswagen across many of their offerings, Acura, Fiat, Lancia, GM (including even the Hummer H3 when it was first introduced), and others.

  18. I agree with you except I think the brand names will go on, at least Ford and Chevy. Either they transform and survive somehow or those names will be bought by something new, because too many people in America are attached to those names. Selling an Electric Ford will be easier than selling a <insert fancy new name> Even if it has nothing to do with the old Ford motor company

  21. it was 60% americans, 20% russians and 20% the rest of the world. the fact that russians were closer to berlin and were first to reach the Fuhrerbunker has little to do with the final victory. The immense resources and industrial machine of the americans was the deciding factor. they made more heavy equipment than all the rest of the allies combined. only in soldiers did the ussr have a larger number.

  25.  @thatguyoverthere9634  duh! of course it was a craphole compared to the west.. they had ok basic food and housing, reasonable healthcare and that's it. no choice, almost no luxuries, just all the same for everybody except the party elites

  29. which is VERY inefficient, thats why Japanese and Western factories moved to a system of sub contractors, where every business specializes in certain parts.making the whole much cheaper, faster and higher quality

  30.  @Klovaneer  because the guy that invented a better disk brake lives 500 km away and build his factory there and not on the same plot. And the guy that makes the best car batteries lives 700 km the other way..... get the idea? Maybe economic forces bring these people together if that saves money, but maybe not, the market will decide what is best and not central planning which has always been wasteful and bad for invention, as communist history shows

  31.  @Klovaneer  The throw-away-economy is a recent phenomenon, most of the history of western capitalism quality won and people would re-use items as long as possible. I never heard about Superfest, so I looked it up, oh its drinking glassware I read the coca cola comment about not breakable being a bad thing, but that is commercial talk about cheap cafe glasses that get tossed around and break often. . Normal people don't use coca cola branded glassware, but just plain ones and they can last a lifetime. I got most of my nice looking glasses from my grandparents who bought them in the 1960s-1980s and they still are all perfectly useable and shining , as are the ones I bought myself as a student in the 2000s. Sure sometimes one breaks if a person is careless, but that's ok. That is just a normal aspect of life.

  35. they never thought of mass transport, in fact the big car companies have a long history of sabotaging public transport in any way they can buy political pressure. All to make sure the cities are build for the car only, so that everybody needs more cars. This has been going on for 100 years since Henri Ford days
