Countries can do whatever they like. You don't 'own' your citizenship in most countries, its the country that decided who's a citizen and who isn't. They generally reserve the right to grant and to revoke citizenship at their discretion. Only some countries who suffered communism behind the Iron Curtain, such as Poland have their constitution written so that the govt can NEVER revoke citizenship once granted unless you ask to renounce - hence why such countries are very strict and rarely grant citizenship to people who aren't ethnically from such countries. The reason such protections exist is the communists forcibly stripped many citizens of their citizenship and exiled them as stateless people during the Cold War (they were the lucky ones who could "buy their lives and exile" and the ones who left the few times the border was open to leave during the Cold War), the unlucky ones faced deportation to Siberia (the GULAG system) to do hard labour and the most unlucky were summarily executed by the NKWD. Countries can declare anyone to be their citizen even without the consent of the individual concerned. Some countries do so to make extraditing someone easier as its harder for countries to refuse to extradite a citizen of the country requesting. Countries can also refuse to let you renounce - its always at their discretion. Basically they can take their countries nationality from you unless you renounce all others you hold.

Lose the slave mentality. Multiple citizenships mean you have options and serve no master. Having only one citizenship by definition makes you a slave as you have no options and MUST do as that country demands.

@dag4836 Why should I have to be taxed to death by one country and not have options to leave? I was born with 4 citizenships (3 Tier A, 1 Tier B) and am saving to do one CBI so I can go where I'm treated best as there's no other way to legally move there. As for your claim of most people not being able to - I hate to break it to you but in most of CANZUK & CUNA, 75% of people are born as dual/multi nationals - many just haven't claimed their citizenships by descent. Literally everyone I went to school with (yes, public primary school) was born with 2+ citizenships. What is anyone "getting away with" by having multiple citizenships? Its literally peoples right of blood (i.e. citizenship by descent). Ironically there's a very good chance you're a dual citizen due to citizenship by descent. Are you just shitty that the ones from whom your welfare check is taken are leaving and that the welfare money might dry up?

@sagepirotess6312 Fun fact - those residence permits mean nothing the moment you lose the citizenship through which you obtained them as they are tied to it. The only way to keep them is to naturalize and become a citizen of them, assuming they allow dual nationality. Don't be complacent - there will come a time where you'll have a tiny window in which to renounce and unless you have other citizenships that won't be an option. If you think naturalizing is quick - its not, just the paperwork can take 1-2yrs, and that'll become much longer if things go bad and they start getting overwhelmed with people doing the same. It's better to have and not need, than to need and not have.

@bananacognacbeeyatch Because it is BS - the fastest citizenship in the EU was 3yrs until that was stopped, now its 5yrs. The only way to get an EU passport in 1 year LEGALLY is to have a 'Heritage Visa' to Italy - its only issued to those who have a single break in their family line of Italian citizenship.

@alrent2992 Means nothing as you can't hold residence permits or visas without another citizenship. You'd have to first turn that residency into a second citizenship.
1
@alrent2992 You still don't get it. Permits mean nothing as they can be revoked in an instant - and they are when new govts are elected. You're still stuck as a US citizen with zero legal way to renounce - even if you wanted to change citizenship as if dual citizenship was illegal the process of renouncing could never take place. When you get a residence permit, that country notifies the country with whose passport you obtain said permit. So you can't 'hide it'
1
@alrent2992 Rubbish. When you apply for a residence permit or visa, the country notifies the country whose passport you're applying with. Its literally part of the "due diligence", AML/KYC documentation and information sharing.

What rock are you sleeping under? That's already the case - heard of citizenship based taxation? Heard of the USA Renouncing fee ($6500) and their giant Exit Tax (to leave their tax system). They basically have it designed so the poor can NEVER leave. The USA is one giant plantation.

@Ghekko-kw3zz In every country I was referring to, only criminals were stripped of citizenship. Govt's always make you a criminal then target you / strip citizenship. Look at the UK where the act of praying in your house visible from the footpath, and hurting someones feelings are both now crimes that hold long jail sentences. No one ever thought those things would ever become serious crimes. How long until the same is said of having dual/multi citizenships and / or of having wealth? The 'west' is collapsing and govt's will target anyone who they can in order to 'stay in control'. Australia and the UK are both known to have illegally stripped people of citizenship in the last 35 years after deciding people were criminals without proof, and leaving them stateless. That's why Australia had to change and pass laws that they can only strip Australian citizenship from dual / multi nationals who were deemed to be criminals. Am I saying it'll affect you? Nope. What I'm saying is that its possible in the future, that govt's make whatever they like to be a crime so they can do as they please. I would definitely recommend NEVER officially listing all your nationalities on govt paperwork as that information is how they know if they can target you for stripping of citizenship or for internment in the event of a war.

Your example is pure bullshit. They stayed and fought because their home treated them best but was being militarily invaded by scum. The reality is that in the current time, the 99% hate anyone who saves money, works hard and creates wealth. Hence the 1% leave to places that aren't hating on them or threatening them on the daily.
1
And you can NEVER leave because you can NEVER renounce as that requires holding a second citizenship. That attitude of yours shows that you want the country to be a slave country. Sounds like you don't want your welfare money to vanish as the taxpayers leave because they're sick of being taxed to death.
1
@joannahayden9544 So? That's what intelligent people do. If you were intelligent you'd be doing the same. Ever hear of "don't put all your eggs in the one basket"? My choice is to retain the four citizenship I was born with, to continue to save for doing one CBI and to maximize my options whilst people such as yourself lose everything and become starving because they'd rather "go down with the ship" because its the easier option. There's nothing moral or superior about self destruction. Wake Up!
1
Yet you conveniently ignore the fact that the 99% hate anyone who's successful, hardworking and who wants to build wealth. Why would anyone in that 1% care about the 99% who hate and threaten them daily whilst they live on welfare (i.e. taxes that others worked for).
1
Drop the slave mentality. If you have one citizenship then you are a slave to that slave country, as you have no choice but to do exactly as they demand. If you have multiple citizenships you are free as you have choices and aren't a slave to a country.

@nobodynever7884 not true if dual nationality was banned. Residence permits and visas are fast disappearing and aren't granted to most Tier A country nationals. One can't renounce without first having a second nationality. Also, most countries won't naturalize you just because you live there, you need very specific visas or permits for the time to count. Also, if dual nationality was banned then CBI wouldn't be an option as you wouldn't be able to renounce as that would require another citizenship first. Banning dual/multi nationality is a way to trap people in a country
