Literally why the native Americans created the Dakota firepit - highly efficient, discreet, very safe and puts out basically no light.

@ttkddry Dude, it has nothing to do with safety, its about control and keeping everyone inside the 15-minute cities (i.e. out of the forest). If it were safety, then how the hell does Australia survive? Australia still lets licenced hunters have a 'fire with a purpose' (cooking, warmth, etc.), and, if you own a farm you can have a campfire on said farm; in either case you just need 2m clear in all directions, and 25L+ on hand and/or a suitable fire extinguisher. Only on days of 'total fire ban' are all flames banned unless they're inside a 'habitable structure'.

Yeah, he forgot to mention the part where he probably gives a lecture for 2hrs 20mins, then does 10mins of practical. Sadly it doesn't surprise me as Europeans love trying to over-complicate everything with 'rules', long-winded explanations and history lessons, etc. They really need to just keep everything simple and to the point and get rid of the whole 'course & licence' for every little thing.

@HC_Productions_UK Major problem for those that 'bug-in'. Most sewers rely on giant pumps to operate these days due to increased population. Without power, these pumps will quit working and then there's a high chance of sewers back-flowing. If you don't have a way to turn off your sewer connection in a disaster, your residence will rapidly become unlivable and actually unsafe to live in.

@12313846 Hate to break it to you but the reality is that the USA is safer because everyone has access to firearms. In Europe, the regimes (sorry, I mean govts) have firearms, as do all the criminals. Only a complete fool thinks that the criminals aren't heavily armed. Heck, I've seen media release photos of the stuff the police have been seizing throughout the EU from criminals - most of the stuff is what the USA call NFA items (incl. full auto) and 'destructive devices'. Basically should SHTF happen, the law abiding are nothing but targets for all the criminals who'll simply be marauders an take what they want / need. If anything being law abiding in Europe is one of the most dangerous situations to be in during a SHTF.

A 'licence for a fire' - never heard of that before. Also, what's with Europe and the whole no campfire thing? I can understand they don't want large bonfires, but what's the problem with campfires for cooking and for sitting around. Sure bushfires need to be avoided (they're a huge problem in Australia) but Australia's never had an issue with a 'fire for a purpose'. A quick Google search even shows that camp stoves (Trangia, Jetboil, etc.) are all illegal to use in forests. What's going on with Europe? Its like the whole place is anti-camping and basically already 15-minute cities. Pure insanity. Oh and incase anyone listened to that fool of an 'instructor', there are ONLY 3 priorities of survival (Protection, Water, Food). Location is irrelevant as its part of protection but truly subordinate to protection as protection from dangers, weather, etc. is location independent.

He'd have to likely make one of a discreet colour. I've noticed that in the EU, CANZUK & CUNA countries, all the camping gear is now primarily available in bright highly visible colours and that things that are discreet or OD Green (olive-drab) are getting harder (and more expensive) to get. The more they try to force everyone to stay in the cities, the more they restrict the gear. These days, in CAN, AU & NZ the only real way to get good, modern equipment that is OD green (or camo) is to be a licenced hunter as only hunting supplies are easily available in those colours.

@mikemcdonald5147 Doesn't have to be tacticool, doesn't need to be camo, even a plain dark grey would work. Basically anything that isn't neon/fluro and of a colour that would disappear 20ft from a path is needed. The cover on his pack is visible from the metaphorical 'mile away'.

@myname-mz3lo Still doesn't change the fact that he's making himself a target by being as obvious as possible. In Europe, there's more people than in the USA, and unlike the USA, most people in Europe aren't prepared and would happily resort to taking from others in order to 'survive'. Lastly, if you think that things will be different in Europe than the USA, simply because 'firearms' then you're truly deluded. Many EU countries, including France and Czechia, have very liberal firearm laws and very high ownership of firearm rates; that's not counting all the illegally held firearms that the criminals have. Police seizures of illegally held firearms account for less than 1% of all illegally held firearms. Extrapolate the real number and realize that things are as bad, if not worse in Europe because most people are defenseless and will likely fall victim to the criminals who are armed.

@chesterricherson3565 Dude, they only operate in three major areas - parts of Asia, the Middle East, and off the west coast of Africa. If you avoid those areas and stay out in the ocean (>200Nm) near Africa, you're very unlikely to encounter trouble. Even on land - ever heard of marauders and gangs? Its about being smart and avoiding the worst areas. Everything is a calculated risk.
