  2. Wow! Great story. I saw the title because I know of a cousin who passed for white and moved to New York and married a white guy, back in the day. I never knew her, but her sisters talked about her. I hope you continue documenting your story. I think there's an urge in many of us to want to uncover and know more about ourselves, and thus, the threads unravel. Thanks for sharing your story, and I hope you will continue to share it.❤🙏🏽

  3. Just one of the ways that the social construction of 'race' has hurt us all. I have a cousin that passed for white back in the day and married a white man. I was a child and confused by that information. I didn't understand how she could do that because she was cutting herself off from her family. I knew white colleagues when I was a graduate student who had native American heritage but didn't know much about it because it was a 'secret.' Amazing to me. I'm glad you are uncovering the knowledge and know you will integrate it all in a good way for you (and maybe your family, too).

  5. Hey, Beautiful! Such an interesting conversation. I've heard about the disinheriting or denial of people to the registry. It's so interesting considering 'the history.' I grew up knowing the one drop rule (which is why my cousin who passed seemed so scandalous to us back then). Also, at that time kids did not want to claim being black because of the racism and so often said we have Indian, in order to minimize the weight. Many black folks did have Indian blood (my great grandfather was 100% Cherokee, and somewhere there was also Blackfeet). At one point I thought my mom was white because she was so fair and because of the texture of her hair. I think when history as we understand it is turned on its head, we will be surprised by what is what, and who is who. I love how you are exploring this conversation.

  9. I taught this to my American History students at a university many years ago. Yes, some groups that came surely did experience what you have said here. Similar stereotypes and treatment happened to the Irish and the Greeks, as well. All were at one time truly disparaged. All 'became white' after that. Love watching your exploration and growth. 🥰🧡🌞💮

  10. Yes, claiming the indian heritage was big when I was young. People were quick to claim that to reject their blackness, so problematic was race prejudice in those days. Yes, I am Cherokee, too, and it did not show up anywhere in the DNA. No Cherokee princess, but my great grandfather full-blooded Cherokee. There is also Blackfeet somewhere. I've heard white people say that they found out of some native ancestry later in life (when I was in grad school), but they were not allowed to talk about it. I don't remember if it was Cherokee, but it was N American, in general. ) For me, NA have told me they could "tell" I had Indian ancestry (as they called it) based on my appearance. Always been an interesting topic to me. Love how you research. Thanks for getting here. 😀

  11. Your brother is handsome and does look Arab. 🙂 I will check out the documentary. People get their panties in a wad over stuff like this. See how this concept of 'race" has been used to hurt us all? . We haven't been taught our true history, and one day everything will come to life. And I think then the whole world will be shocked. Original people from that land were black. I remember writing something about this in a paper in grad school, and my professor made sure to correct my (small) comment telling me something about Greece, and etc. As long as the mainstream history is accepted, this is not likely to be corrected. I like how you said, "how we discuss identity as a whole." And that is it. It's all been twisted and so we have to go through this. But that's another subject for another time. That's my 0.2.   12. Exactly, Danielle. At the end of the day, we are all connected. "Getting out of these binary mindsets is crucial." Agree. On Angela Davis: I do like her. I met her a few time about 30 years ago. (I met Skip Gates, too, but he wouldnt remember me). When I saw her again, I was surprised that she remembered my name. She was very down to earth and lovely. She made a great impact upon black history, but I cannot be surprised that she would discover her heritage because we're all connected somehow. It's only the crazy system that installed racism that has brought the color and culture divide. Truth is we were not meant to be divided as we have become. In doing my genealogy, I was able to go all the way back to the British white ancestor that headed my maternal bloodline. 🥰 While you cannot see all the admixtures in me, I claim them all. 💙💜❤🤍🖤💛

  14. It sure can pop up at anytime! I used to think it might have happened with my cousin who passed for white. "What if it popped out in one of her children?" I asked myself. I was a child when I learned this, so I never knew the end result. But I bet... 🙂 After so many years, why not? My great great grandfather was full-blooded Cherokee, and I had Native Americans tell me that they could tell I had native ancestry. Anywho... I remember seeing some documentary on Charlotte... can't remember where or when (maybe during the time of the Megan/Harry wedding time), but this was the topic. p.s. Love Bridgerton. As for Charlotte, I'll keep my thoughts to myself. 😉

  20. Yes, I read the book and saw the movie when I was a child. It was disturbing to me because at that time I was trying to understand the bigotry and hatred of that time. That movie scared me. You look Latin, Native American and Arab to me today. I love that. I reject both sides, too. What we are needing transcends the political. Thank you for pushing forward, Sweets. 🥰

  22. Shows how crazy all this is. There is still the idea is if you have 1/10 black blood, you are black. We need to know all we are made of but the labels have hurt us in so many ways, esp. in US culture.
