  1. Early Buddhists forbid depictions of the Buddha, but that didn't last long as the religion spread, and the iconography became diverse and beautiful expressions of the local motifs. To this day Islam forbids images of Mohammad, which remains observed. The tension between spiritual devotion and idolatry will always exist.
