  2. If you are ever in a red state and driving some back roads, turn on the radio and you will understand what has happened in America. The right wing radio and religious programming is relentless and there is nothing else on the dial. Pretty scary to first discover this - like some kind of cheesy science fiction movie or something. Armies of willing zombies driving around like a George Romero film.

  4. ***** The task left to the informed in these situations is to find and cultivate common ground and not venture too far afield. What people have in common is far greater than our differences, but there are political and religious forces that amplify and exploit those differences with great skill. It is also good to realize there are like-minded people everywhere, but in different concentrations. I have worked in some VERY small timber towns and made some lifelong friends who are genuinely good and open minded folks. And I've met some A-1 douche bags in Ivy League cities like Boston and New Haven.
