@RLKDLK0816 I have absolute interest in protecting her constitutional rights, but none are indicated here. The girl’s decisions, the actions SHE CHOSE that night controlled that situation. Those officers couldn’t have been nicer or more compassionate with her. The explained over and over and over and over again what was going to happen, but she refused to listen, choosing instead to scream over them what SHE wanted like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum. She was getting arrested, they had to take the baby from her. When she wouldn’t let go and started pulling the infant, what choice did the officer have. She had to let go or the baby could have been hurt. Me I don’t know if this girl was drunk or not. If she was wasted, it wouldn’t excuse her behavior, but it might explain it, but if she was drunk, that would mean she was out drinking with her INFANT! Any way you slice it, this is on the girl.

Then shouldn’t anyone who espouses CRT have a law degree? I mean legality can be a confusing issue to non-attorneys and their opinions, those who aren’t attorneys, should be given no weight because their opinions are ill-informed, right? And isn’t it also true then that those who disagree with the conclusions drawn by CRT proponents should NEVER be called “racists” for disagreeing because CRT is about the “legality” of systems (many of which have been in place for quite a while) and NOT individuals? Thus, you have no problem conceding that “racial disparity” often has nothing to do with contemporary “racism”? The disparity is driven by any number of contributing factors, right? of which racism is not necessarily one? You see the problem is that “critical thinking” goes part and parcel with the “scientific method”, right? Which necessitates healthy skepticism toward any hypothesis, agreed? And if “facts” support more than one perception or explanation, it calls the hypothesis itself into question. True? My problem with CRT is that it starts with the conclusion that the disparity is definitively caused by “racism”. There is really no skepticism at all. It’s a product of a racist country, that perpetuates systems that are racist and everyone in the racist country who lives under “the systems” are necessarily racists. Right? Do you see how ridiculous that sounds from an intellectual standpoint?

Not including that little fact would be picking and choosing which facts they want and which to discard. There is a lot of history to be taught in school. Should we waste a % of the semester teaching people about eugenics? No, because it’s basis has been scientifically disproven and rejected. It deserves no more that a 5 minute discussion of its relevance. The same could be said for the principles of CRT and “systemic racism.”. What confuses me is who told you that a successful life was as simple as “get an education, have 2 parents, and don’t do violent crimes”?? It is WAY MORE complicated than that, isn’t it? Sorry you were given false expectations but we are all in the same boat today. So you see it’s not that people who don’t achieve success “did something wrong,” they just didn’t choose to do the things it takes to succeed. Sounds like you DID what you needed to do. Why did you make the right choices where others did not? Probably because your parents instilled the importance of an education and a good work ethic in you. The kids that grow up with no guidance, no discipline, no real concern for them, unfortunately, usually lose and get nothing. How is that white peoples fault and what the hell are white people supposed to do about insufficient or narcissistic parenting? Remember, we live in a country where 10% of the people (well represented by all races) have 90% of the wealth and 1-2% of that 10% have 90% of that. This b race argument is about 50 years too late I’m afraid. Again, we are all in the same boat now. Resurrecting racial division and resentment isn’t going to change anything. It is just going to foment hate and inertia as people wait for their problems to be solved by others who have their own problems to deal with. To me it appears this “systemic racism” concept does nothing more that excuse people from taking responsibility for their own choices and behavior. It’s ALWAYS someone else’s fault. NO Americans in general aren’t big on introspection and personal responsibility. That is likely why we’re all going down the toilet…..together.

@charlesstevensEnki My bad. I got it. To call them “hostile” from being enslaved. if I were enslaved, I imagine I would be pretty hostile toward my enslaver. But if I were to out live my enslaver, unless someone had taken his/her place as enslaver, there would be no one left to be hostile to. It’s only natural to have anger, hostility, even rage toward the people who wrong us. Ideally, it is channeled into protest and putting one’s time and energy into ensuring that ‘wrong’ doesn’t happen again to anyone. There is no better example, on par perhaps in India during Ghandi’s time, where injustice has been conquered and the fight for equality succeed than the black American struggle. It is truly remarkable in its achievement. But those periods in history and those struggles had the winds of change at their tails. A scientific revolution was going on. The study of genetics was exploding and undermining, if not all out refuting, the foundation and justification of discrimination. In this country, two World Wars had forced people out of their myopic comfort zones and allowed people to discover for themselves the error in those beliefs that supported discrimination. Those periods were also marked by extraordinary leaders, (Ghandi and MLK among so many others) who brought people together and, at great self sacrifice, championed their cause to success. In other words, THEY WON!
Do slaves have hostility toward their enslavers? I would think so. But how is that hostility warranted by the great, great, great grandchildren of those slaves, toward 1) the great great great grandchildren of the enslavers, 2) all people who “look like” them whose families didn’t come here until after slavery was ended in this country and had no part of it, and 3) who have never done anything to you, nor you to them?? Hostility can be inherited, but as a curse, especially as it grows further from its purpose.

@icystrangers5482 Here’s it is in a nutshell. DON’T ENGAGE IN UNLAWFUL BEHAVIOR AND IT WONT MATTER WHETHER POLICE ARE THERE OR NOT OR WHAT THEY DO. Sometimes I think people are under the impression certain behaviors that are illegal are only wrong and to be avoided “IF YOU GET CAUGHT.” That is NOT the impetus behind the law. Some behaviors, we, as a people through our representative elected officials, have decided are so dangerous or so wrong and damaging to society (I.e. our collective best interests) that the behavior is prohibited. Period. There is no “Yes, but......” to that concept. The “but” doesn’t negate the breaking of a law, it only becomes relevant in terms of degree of punishment, not guilt or innocence. We are each responsible for the consequences of the choices we make. I agree that Ma’Khia got cheated but it wasn’t by society. It was by the people who brought her into being and then dumped her. It pains me to think of the dysfunction, pain, and havoc those parents condemned that poor girl to. It ISN’T fair by any stretch of the imagination! But then again thinking life is supposed to be fair will disappoint you and get you nowhere every time. IT ISN’T!! My frustration is the focus on the police as the problem. Why is there no outrage at the injustice these parents exhibited on this child that THEY decided to give life. Why isn’t the community holding THEM up for public opprobrium and critique. As long as parents like that exist and get away with it, there will always be “Ma’Khias” and lots of them. It’s so easy to blame systems and entities for our lives, but doesn’t it all begin with us as individuals? Let’s face it, with parents like that, Ma’Khia never had a chance at making good decisions for herself. She never asked to be in this world. It’s rotten luck she got stuck with narcissistic pinheads for parents who can’t see past their own reflections, but I hate to tell you, it happens all the time. There should be a new law: IF YOU CANT TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND BE AS SELFLESS AS GOOD PARENTING REQUIRES, THEN YOU CANT HAVE CHILDREN. But let’s put the responsibility where it belongs; on ourselves as individuals.

@abottleofRUMtv Actually, no. The cops were told a guy in a full face black ski mask was waiving his arms and acting strangely. HE WAS WEARING A FULL FACE MASK. They wouldn’t have known what color he was when they told him to stop. Additionally, The cause of death was UNDETERMINED according to the coroner. Could have been the boy’s heart condition, his exertion in resisting, his asthma, the chokehold (but he was still breathing after that so….not sole), the ketamine administered by EMTS……OR maybe it was a bit of all of those things acting simultaneously producing a terrible, inexplicable-as-to-why, accidental tragedy. BUT FOR ANY of the above factors, the boy might still be here today. It’s horrible and sad but it doesn’t always have to be someone’s fault. Sometimes it’s wrong place, wrong time, wrong circumstances, wrong reaction. PERIOD. THAT is why, in order to avoid situations like this, everybody must know that if an officer tells you to do something, just do it. There is no point in arguing or talking smack, or giving excuses, or telling them they’re wrong, or god forbid resisting. All they need to “arrest” is an arrest warrant or a reasonable suspicion a crime was committed and you could have done it. Whether you actually did it or not or whether they will take it to trial isnt up to law enforcement at all. It’s up to prosecutors. So once an arrest is in motion, it will happen.

@andrewallen9993 I think common sense MUST prevail. YOU are a law abiding citizen. The police are there for YOUR protection as a member of the public. What do they protect you from? Law breakers. Unless you are breaking the law, they are NOT your enemy. But you, as do we all, have a personal responsibility in the choices you make as to who, where, what, how, and why you do what you do. Right? So, for example, if you were cashing a check at a bank and some dudes ski masks came in with sprayed a semi-automatic at the ceiling. What if the cops then rushed in and told everyone to “get down,” Would you stay standing and start spewing the bill of rights? NO. Because you know the cop is telling you that for your own safety. The cops interest in this young man was nothing more than a safety check until the kid started resisting. THEN it necessarily became something else. The cops had NO IDEA what was up with this kid. A cop has a right NOT to get shot and killed. They want to go home each day just like you.

@QueenDivineLove Happy to meet you. I don’t know what you mean by “lies”. Which of the presented facts were lies? Also, I think you are saying that because there were other people in the class who were equally frustrated with the teacher, you thought you were entitled to be difficult with her and then refuse to leave the class when asked. Is that right? If so, I hope you learned the key lessons to take from that experience; 1) NEVER count on people to back you (even if it was their idea in the first place) 2) Choose your battles carefully and never rush into one without thinking it all the way through, 3) Whether you like it or not, authority exists and you must and should respect it. It’s there for a reason you know. Think about the chaos without it. 4) Only fools rush in. Never rush into immediate action in problem situations. It almost always ends badly because it’s leading with emotion, not intelligence. There are many ways to get from A to B. Choose the best one for the situation. 5) If it’s a personal issue, remember, just like you don’t like everybody, not everyone is going to like you. There are tons of miserable people in this world for various reasons; people who resent other people for various reasons. If dealing with them is a necessity, take the focus off of yourself and what you want and try to figure out what they want or need. You will catch way more flies with honey than vinegar in your travels. What it’s really all about is getting you where you want to go, right?

The point is to give an outline of what happened, to be filled in with higher education. As for the things you listed, Redlining was made illegal by the civil rights act in 1967: the Dred Scott decision was politically motivated in the years leading up to the civil war and was strongly opposed in northern states; Tulsa was a race riot with deaths on both sides, the consequence of which was the burning of the town to the ground, which prompted new building laws; in the case of any eminent domain action, it is the benefit to the whole that matters. If you had to decide where to run a highway such that it would be most beneficial to the greatest numbers, are you going to propose to put it right through a thriving economic center, or put it through an adjacent blighted or run down area that would not only serve the economic center, but cause an infusion of capital into the blighted area? It’s common sense, not racially motivated. You see to teach/explain these specifics at the K-12 level would have to be at the exclusion of chunks of the outline. And I will say everyday, all day: Moral indignation has no place in the teaching of history.

Allowing the handful of billionaires in this country, several of whom are black, to keep hoarding money you can kiss generational wealth for everyone else goodbye. “Generational wealth” is not a right or an entitlement it’s an economic condition that is disappearing for ALL OF US. I’m afraid it’s pretty much a moot issue as 75% of the people in this country are living paycheck to paycheck. White people can’t give you what they don’t have. Shouldn’t we be standing together as Americans against the money hoarders who will end democracy if they amass enough because they will own and therefore control everything? You know as well as I do, if the reinstituted the draft today, or made military service compulsory, there would be an exodus of the age eligible population that would make our current immigration issues pail by comparison.But b it’s not just military service we don’t respect any more. Look at teachers, most of whom need 2 jobs to make ends meet. Why? Well, look at who we DO pay ungodly sums of money to in our society. While the military dwindles and the teachers strike to get a living wage, WE. - ALL OF US - pay millions upon millions of dollars to people who dribble, hit, carry or kick around a confined space and to even mediocre singers, bad actors and vacuous talking heads. What WE, all of us, as a society value most is being entertained! We can’t blame that on anyone without blaming OURSELVES too!

But it ISNT free, is it. They say 80% of all medical care an individual will receive over a lifetime will be incurred during the last 5 years of their life. SOMEBODY is going to have to pay for it and it will fall to taxes. But I digress. You argue for proportional redistribution of wealth along racial lines seemingly on the argument that black Americans have doesn’t more time suffering on the cross of fairness, I.e. on the basis of pity. Well imagine being part of a minority where, “you only have to go back handful of generations until your ancestors were” treated like chattel, could not own land or inherit it, and who suffered degradation, oppression, and humiliation at the hands of their oppressors. Specifically, I’m referring to women. Look around, in some jurisdictions in this country, it is still impossible to RAPE your wife and god knows the “bitches and hos” nomenclature still runs rampant (always wondered how those words are different from the “n” word, haven’t you?). Women are still fighting to make equal pay for equal work. But women have made enormous strides toward equality in the last 50 years. How? By proving presumed inferiority a fiction, not just complaining how unfair it is and demanding others “fix” it for them. That will never work.

As of 2019, the stats show that 42% of single parent black Americans own their own homes, but that number goes up to 75% for 2-parent black households. Why, because the pooling of wealth creates more wealth and thus more opportunity to generate wealth. Surely you don’t blame white people for the black communities divorce or unmarried rate, do you. Doesn’t that fall to personal choice and responsibility? And if the absence of “generational wealth” is the cause of inequity, isn’t it and wasn’t it the responsibility of black Americans to make choices in life devoted to to the generation of such wealth? Have they? It certainly isn’t society’s responsibility. EVERYONE in this country is subject to monetary inequality, regardless of color. Economic stratification is inherent in the capitalist system. So the Bruce’s now own the land and they will rent it back to the city who will pay $412,000 to the Bruces per year. But of course they, as owners, will pay property taxes around $200,000 per year, plus they’ll have to pay taxes on the $412,000 income, state and and fed, which might be $100,000(?). That leaves the Bruce’s with, in hand, about $100,000 per year. The initial lease term is 2 years, almost certainly with options to renew. The land is a park and will stay a park. IF, and it’s a big “if”, the county wants to buy it back, the price is fixed at $20 mil. Of course there wouldn’t be too many competing bids to buy a park (not a money maker) and the county doesn’t have to buy it back. So all this was to give 2(?) people each $50k per year. Not exactly a life changing event from that perspective, is it. But Newsome is milking the publicity with LOTS of fan fare.

The problem or disconnect here seems to be one of understanding. There seems to be a prevailing impression in black communities that NOT doing what a police officer tells you to do during an arrest, arguing with them about guilt or innocence (wrong time, wrong place for that), and trying to run away from the cops are EVER good ideas. That behavior in and of itself is a crime. NO ONE helps themself with that behavior. I think it’s imperative we give tutorials to the public about what LAW is, why we have it, what it’s for, how the criminal process works and what everyone’s role is in that process. Maybe that would help. Surely no one advocates theft or fraud, carrying a weapon when you shouldn’t have one, violence against another person. If that behavior were allowed by everybody, there would be chaos. So then how do we prevent people from engaging in these actions? Are there really thefts and fraud that “aren’t that bad”? Or people shouldn’t be held accountable for? Who should make that call? Is it based on amount of money,? where it occurred? How it occurred? These are NOT questions police officers are supposed to answer, agreed? That is for the legislature made up of elected representatives to work out. Police are there to enforce those decisions. Considering one needs but a GED to be a cop, it seems ridiculous to expect an officer to answer the questions above, assess the specific situation, and choose the appropriate amount of “force” to accomplish an arrest ALL with minimal information about the situation and in a split second. Could you do that perfectly every time? It’s not just law enforcement that needs to change its consciousness. Black communities need to develop a new understanding of the law and its purpose. This HAS to be a group project encompassing all Americans or its pointless. All this factioning is accomplishing nothing. Can we PLEASE STOP POINTING FINGERS AND ASK OURSELVES WHAT AND HOW WE CAN CHANGE AS INDIVIDUALS TO MAKE THINGS BETTER? EVERYONE will need to sacrifice and work together to get us out of this mess we’re in.

What Trump is doing is trying to stall, stall, stall the CRIMINAL cases against him until after the election in the hopes that he wins the election and thereby avoid altogether being held accountable for his CRIMES. In short, he is twisting and perverting the law for its very opposite purpose and intent. In earlier days, that would have been the definition of “unethical”, but we seem to have done away with consideration of ethics this last decade. The first one was to decide whether a sitting president cannot murder people and get away with it scott free because he’s president, and this one that asks if the founding fathers meant in drafting 14th Amend, Sec 3, they meant that if a former member of the government participates in an insurrection against the lawful government of the US, they cannot hold a government office again, UNLESS they run for Pres or VP, the 2 highest offices in our government. @Robert-bb9wi I stand corrected. I thought you were younger. You actually have just under a decade on me. Huge difference those 10 years made then (although not as dramatic as the changes are currently coming today). But those 10 years between us made a huge difference. the “White Only” signs were gone by the time I reached cognition. I heard that it used to be that way and I thought, as a child, how stupid that was. My point is that the civil rights act in the late 60s made those practices illegal and actionable. Therefore, by the time I became aware, they were mistakes of the past. I did not live or experience that and NEVER thought like that. That was 50 YEARS ago (as hard as that is to believe). What gets me are those born around the millennium that never experienced that kind of racism themselves and in fact have been on the receiving end of trillions of dollars in social programs specifically created to remedy those wrongs and even the playing field, but feel entitled to be paid for what others suffered and what they think they are owed. Many black Americans have succeeded as well as any one else in this country in the last few decades and are well represented across the board, including the top 10%ers. You talk of what MIGHT have been had this happened or that not happened. But you know as well as I do that life is not fair; never has been, never will be. How about old people? And if not shoot migrants, then what, if they are caught? Where do we detain them? For how long? The children too? And if you want them sent back to country of origin, do you have any idea what that would cost? And you realize that will be a death sentence for many? Today, they all seem to be more interested in putting on a dog and pony show to sway our opinions than actually accomplish anything. There is no end to this in sight. We have AT LEAST 2 more years of inertia to endure with these fools. Meanwhile, the world is changing rapidly. If we are going to remain competitive with those who hope to defeat us, this nonsense has to stop. There is only one truth, yet this country has divided itself down the middle with respect to what that truth is. 35% believe A, and 35% believe B (the remaining 30% of fringe dwellers on both sides don’t care what the truth is because they are pushing their own agenda). A and B cannot both be true, which means one side is ensconced in a false narrative. Why? Because people are not thinking for themselves today and are instead letting other people tell them what to think and believe. The information is out there to be found if people would put the slightest effort into finding it. In other words, it is very likely we have dumbed our population down to such an extent, we are easily influenced and easily led. Our young generations become increasingly useless and myopic, unable to see past themselves and unable to think for themselves. This CAN NOT end well for anyone. We have lost things like ethics and integrity (defined as doing the right thing no matter what it costs you) in favor of lies, hypocrisy and narcissism. You spoke of accountability which I agree is necessary for our survival. But we the people must hold THEM ALL accountable, not just those perceived to be on “the other side.”. Anything less is just more of the same. These hearings are a waste of time and taxpayer dollars as they will accomplish absolutely nothing. If you want to advocate throwing them all out of “power” and restoring the principles and ideals that made us a superpower, I will lead the fight with you. But to pick one side or the other to “back”, is to perpetuate the travesty our political system has become, NOT because the system itself is broken, but because the people who play in it are broken. The only thing that will change this is if we hold THEM ALL accountable and then hold ourselves to a higher standard.

Exercise a little empathy and put yourself in a cop’s shoes. You are the cop assigned to an anti-drug trafficking task force. It comes down from headquarters that there’s been an upswing of traffickers using buses to traffic up and down the Atlantic corridor. Thus, you are told to be suspicious of all buses and to perform random checks if a traffic violation occurs. There is a protocol established for such stops and it is taught to you as a member of the task force. You see the bus in this story driving in the left lane (probably at about 50-55 mph as it’s a school bus) impeding faster traffic. That’s why there’s a law prohibiting trucks from driving in the fast lane. You stop the bus. Now when you approach that bus, which is your job to do, you expect 1 of 2 things; either it’s a school bus full of kids traveling thru the state in a bus with out-of-state plates, OR the bus is a beard for a cartel and is carrying 100 kilos of cocaine for distribution, in which case it is reasonable to believe there could be heavily armed people in that bus facing huge mandatory minimums if they get caught; In other words, people who have nothing to lose. If the latter is even remotely possible, wouldn’t you approach with caution? Also, as a cop, you are well aware that “jails are full of innocent people,” meaning criminals never admit wrong doing. You’ve learned NOT to trust what people say, but to remain objective and investigate for yourself. Now you do your investigation and it turns up nothing, as I’m sure many such stops do. You realize apologize for the delay and, recognizing the driver is out of state, let the driver slide on the citation. I guarantee you those guys conducted the stop as they were trained to do. What would you have done differently in their shoes?

Why won’t there be peace between black people and police, at least between law abiding black people. The cops are there to protect them just as much as anyone. But you must understand, law is necessary to the survival and operation of a society. You cannot break the law and then get self-righteous about your rights. You have, in such instances, totally disrespected the rights of others, right? Forget what you think you know about the past. Don’t make it YOUR future when you don’t have to. Many many black Americans are doing as well as anyone else in this country. It’s only about 5-6 % that are stuck in the past. I don’t blame them though. I blame their parents for choosing to have kids but not stepping up to the plate and raising the bar on THEMSELVES to help their kids have a better life than they did, to achieve more than they did. Weaving within a lane, headlights not on, unsafe turning maneuver, failure to come to complete stop, failure to stop at limit line, and the like. The thing with DUIs is that as soon as the cop approaches the vehicle and smells alcohol, the original infraction usually gets subsumed into the DUI investigation. The resolution as to whether you committed that infraction or not is not going to be made on the side of the road, is it? Only a judge, in court can decide that. So if they ask the driver to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety tests, they are obligated to comply with the investigation. Now, if you want to attack the probable cause or original infraction in court, have at it, but you will be on trial for the DUI (if you were over a .08 BAC). Plus, don’t know how you’ll prove you were NOT weaving within a lane or came to a complete stop.

And you are willing to KNOWINGLY manipulate and pervert the rights afforded you through our Constitution to avoid the consequences of your actions and allow you to do whatever you want, when you want. That is a slippery, slippery slope, you know. If you thought through that you would see what a BAD idea that is in the end….for you and for society. There’s a concept you may not have heard of. It’s called “integrity”. Essentially it means doing the right thing even when no one’s watching. Not just the “legal thing”, but the “right thing”, which is much broader. You realize that laws are necessary for a society to function, right? And that law enforcement is NECESSARY to make sure the laws are followed (if everyone had integrity, they wouldn’t be necessary, but people increasingly don’t, so law enforcement has increasingly been needed). We, as members of our respective societies (city, state, federal), hire people from among us to enforce the laws for all our sakes. In so doing, we endow them with certain authority and liberties to accomplish that task. ( How effective would an officer be if they couldn’t look anywhere or talk to anyone to uncover violations and violators?). We, in turn, as members of society agree to give that authority to them and cooperate with them for the sake of our collective interests. This idea that law enforcement is the enemy is entirely misplaced. Your ire should be directed at those who make law enforcement necessary. THEY are the ones spoiling it for the rest of us. NOT the cops! Remember, when the sh$t hits the fan, cops run toward it, so the rest of us can run away. THAT deserves your RESPECT, and if you can’t muster that or don’t know what it is, you, at the very least, owe your silence.

@MattDunlapCO Actually, the elimination of pre-existing conditions for GROUP policies was in 2010 or 2011. However, that elimination did not apply to individual policies until 2014. My brother died in 2014. His situation was complicated because it was a corrupt personal representative who refused to pay the health policy premiums after the death of our mother, who had maintained the policy for him virtually his whole life. The PR/Trustee told me to put my brother on SSI, which, of course, even if you meet the $15k per year income cap, will take a minimum of 1 1/2 years to get approved. My brother was on life sustaining blood pressure medication that he could no longer afford (it went from $50 per month to thousands of dollars). During the next year and 1/2 he had 2 episodes where his bob went over 200. Each time it spiked, he was in the hospital with no insurance for 5 days ($100+k each time), 3 of which he didn’t know his own name. The damage done by those 2 spikes shut down his kidneys. So you see sometimes we think we know what the circumstances are but we don’t, do we?

Personally, I really liked “Do the Right Thing” and “She’s gotta have it” and School Daze” and I really did NOT like “Dead Poets Society”. Honestly, I don’t give a damn whether it’s a black film or a white film or a brown film or a purple film. I like GOOD film, no matter the subject matter and no matter who made it. You know, intelligent writing, compelling performances, thoughtful direction. Spike’s talent in film is inherent and unquestionable. His struggle to figure out this thing we call life, which is reflected in his work, is apparent. Growing up a black male in America in the second half of the twentieth century, was obviously a central theme of concentration in his life. My wish is that he would broaden his voice as a human being. He has such a keen ability to broach difficult subjects with intelligence, understanding, and humor, I can’t help but feel he limits himself. BUT, it’s his life, his choice to make. What he has accomplished is impressive and enviable no matter what!

@martyc909 From what I’ve heard, he was a sweet, cognitively challenged, young man who was definitely loved. I am horrified this happened to him. I am always horrified when people pay the ultimate price for the stupidity of others. But I have seen the footage in this case several times and my outrage is at the people who taught this young man to fear police and assert misunderstood rights and then let him face the outside world alone with those misconceptions. Had some one or some people not taught him that directly or by example, that young man would still be here. Listen to what the boy says through the incident. He didn’t understand the words he’s using. He’s just repeating them. Someone taught him that. What is always overlooked in these police cases is that what kind is of young man he was, how many loved him, how many he loved and how kind he was to others, even that he had mental challenges, all of that is absolutely irrelevant in evaluating the cops behavior. Why? Because There is no possible way the cops could have known any of those things at the time of the incident. In fact, especially today, cops HAVE TO be ready for a suspect, any suspect, to be the worst of the worst. That’s how they survive as a cop. The one time they don’t, will be with one of the worst who will slit their throat or grab their gun and shoot them. Don’t be mad at the cops. Be mad at the vicious morons that make that necessary. Culpability here lies with the stunted people who taught that innocent young man to fear and hate police. The boy froze because of his fear, causing him to refuse to listen or comply. When will those hate mongering people be held accountable for all that hateful, race-baiting rhetoric America’s youth is being indoctrinated with? The price will be a nation of uneducated, entitled sociopaths with no respect for anyone or anything. Something to look forward to.

The “protestors” yelled at and taunted other students and police and blocked people’s access in thorough fares. The school told the students to disperse dozens of times, but they refused. At that point they became trespassers subject to arrest. What you fail to realize is that the school really doesn’t have a choice. The liability to the school is just to great. You see the 1st Amendment says the government can’t stifle your speech. However, there is no Amendment that says anyone has to provide a platform for you to speak, nor is there one requiring anyone to listen or care. For the school, however, If anyone gets hurt during a “protest”, the school would be sued out of existence. But the most ridiculous aspect of the “protests” was that, and I would put money on it, couldn’t find Gaza on a map to save their lives!! You see the African continent was made up of warring tribal societies. The losers of these warring factions were made slaves of the victors. Their leaders, in turn, traded or sold them as slaves to the Europeans. So you see those Africans who were brought to the Americas were already slaves when the Europeans came along. This “new history of America” is spreading a false narrative. No one needs to be educated on embellished false facts and hyperbolic anecdotes designed to justify a single group’s agenda. The errors in your rant are too many to delve into, so I will bullet point a few. To recap, slaves were no stolen from Africa, they were sold as slaves to European merchants. I think you need to stop looking at history with contemporary sensibilities. You need to familiarize yourself with the facts of what life was like hundreds of years ago. Life on the African continent at that time was rather primitive. There were no “businesses” as we understand that word today. These were tribal hunting and gathering societies. We are talking about a time before mechanization, before trains, planes and automobiles, before mass communication. It was a primitive existence of which slavery was a traditional part (still is in some areas today). Remember, slavery had been around for thousands of years by then and was built into many economic models. As for Tulsa and Black Wall Street, again you have been given a false impression. There indeed was a race riot during which both whites and blacks died in the fighting. The destruction of the black community WAZ the result of the building materials used to build the structures there. The buildings were made predominantly of wood. During the fighting, some of the structures caught fire and the town went up like a Roman candle. In fact, new building codes were enacted in Tulsa as a result. Tip: Generational wealth is a thing of the past. Children are taking care of their parents more and more these days. Do you realize that something like 70% of the people in this country are living paycheck to paycheck. Most of us are in the same boat. You don’t think the idea that the founding of this country and everything thereafter has NOT been a giant conspiracy to persecute black people. That notion is not only preposterous, but is indicative of acute paranoia and hubris. You don’t really believe this country and the people have spent and continue to spend inordinate amounts of time thinking coming up with ways to screw black Americans. While you may believe the world revolves around you, I can assure you, human beings are driven too much by their own self-interest, to feel the same. America is the great melting pot. The founding peoples of this great nation came here fleeing persecution in their own countries. Black Americans have no corner on the market of suffering. As for “Roots”, you need to do more research on Alvin Haley, who himself said that he wrote roots in an effort to create a mythology for black Americans. It was not meant to be taken literally. I understand there was much hardship for black slaves in the American south, as there was for the largely white industrial workers in the north, who often worked long days for less than subsistence wages because there was a line of workers around the block who would gladly have taken their place. But things have come a long way since then. YOU did not suffer through that time. What entitles you to be paid for their suffering? Just imagine for a second the enormous amount of knowledge humans have acquired since the 1800s. It is hard for us as human beings to imagine and reconcile the ignorance of our past with our understanding today. But History must be viewed in the context of its time. YOU did not experience the Jim Crowe laws of the antebellum south. YOU did not experience segregation. In fact your primary beef seems to be that you “don’t get no respect.” I hate to tell you this but real respect (as opposed to sycophantic bs) must be earned. Thoughts can not be legislated. The real question then is are you worthy of respect?
As for the “reparations” themselves, the word implies the idea of “returning what was lost or taken.” Aren’t you arguing that people should be compensated for what MIGHT have been? Because if you are, there will be a line for reparations stretching across the country. I’m afraid that life just ISN’T fair and what you believe might have been, might equally NOT have been. Truth is that Some are lucky, some are not. Some succeed, Some don’t. For some, life is good, for some, it utterly sucks. It’s not fair, but it IS the way it is. I believe, however, in self-determination, which is a founding principle of this country. That we, as individuals, control our own destinies through the choices we make at each given moment. THAT is what is meant by the words “freedom” and “equal” we hold so dear. We are free to choose our own paths and to make up our own minds. The problem is we seem to have forgotten that when you make a choice, you accept responsibility for its consequences. There is a cost for everything in life. Every decision to do one thing is at the cost of doing something else. @meatspin. Facts make you sick? Well there’s your problem right there. You see I watched every video i could find over and over again. I kept watching because what i was hearing being reported was NOT what i saw on those videos. I watched the WHOLE incident, not just the last 10 minutes. From the point where the cops approached Floyd’s car after being called by the store clerks across the street because he passed them a fake $20 for cigarettes and refused to give the ciggs back which would have ended the whole thing right there had he done it. I saw the officers approach the car he was passed out in such that the passenger had to rouse him to the consciousness he’d been drifting in and out of. I saw the cops start asking him questions very politely and saw Floyd, who was obviously completely stoned, start hemming and hawing with the cops getting more and more hysterical. I saw the cops, after several patient and polite minutes, ask Floyd to step out of his car, which he refused to do several times, which prompting the cops to try to pull him out of his vehicle. That was the first time I heard Floyd say “I can’t breathe” as he carried on resisting the officers. I saw the officers try to put Floyd in a squad car and watched him fight them every step of the way, claiming he was too claustrophobic, until one officer went to the other side of the car and tried to pull as well as push Floyd into the car, only to see him maneuver himself out of the opposite side car door and on to the ground, where HE ASKED to stay. The whole time Floyd is yelling “I can’t breathe” and calling for his mother and resisting the officers. Then i saw a bunch of colossal morons, who walked into the middle of the incident, start yelling at the officers, causing them to turn their attention toward them as they waited for EMTs to arrive. I saw Floyd on the ground, still yelling and carrying on and Chauvin kneeling over him. I saw NO strain on Chauvin’s face that would indicate effort to apply pressure. (At the time, I didnt even know that Floyd was 6’4” 260lbs and Chauvin was 5’8” 150 lbs.) Still, I saw no strain. I heard Floyd finally stop yelling and immediately thought he had finally passed out from intoxication. By that time focus had shifted to the idiots gathering and yelling at the cops in unison. Later , of course, I found out Floyd had meth and FENTANYL in his system and that he suffered from a heart condition. I also later watched a video of Floyd’s arrest in another matter from one year prior, in which he pulled the exact same antics during arrest down to claiming he couldn’t breath and calling for his mother. I watched these videos again and again because the press was saying Floyd was murdered but that was NOT what I had seen. I won’t even go into the trial travesty with the angry mob outside the courthouse every day demanding their pound of flesh regardless of what was happening inside. THAT is the way I think and if that makes you sick, while it explains a lot about you, drink some peptobismal and lose the misplaced righteous indignation! Or don’t. Nobody gives a damn!

That requires agreement, which we see already is unlikely. 2) a bill must be drafted and proposed by a sponsor (touchy political spot considering 80% of the population is against them) 3) it has to be passed through the legislature, 4) before heading to the capitol for signature (again touchy political move). 5) But even if it were to make it through this gauntlet, a lawsuit challenging the Constitutionality of the new law would be filed immediately, likely by a Republican plaintiff, 6) whereupon it would spend the next few years going through the courts 7) only to wind up ultimately in front of the same Supreme Court that 2 weeks ago said “race-based” violates the constitution. Not much question what they will do.

For example, if you’re top choice of schools is X, and you didn’t get into X, the solution is go somewhere else. If you have good grades, you’ll get in. You can always transfer. If you applied to many schools and didn’t get in, either your assessment of your performance is not realistic and you need to apply to

That’s why they have contingency agreements where a lawyer takes the case and advances costs and takes a SIZEABLE cut of whatever money is recovered. However, that means the lawyer has to have a slam dunk case, or enough to make the school settle to avoid litigation. If you have proof of discrimination on ethnicity grounds, get all your documents together (application, correspondence, transcript, and anything else submitted. Make multiple copies of all of them and YOU keep the originals. Then start doing the rounds with civil rights attorneys. Call and ask for an appointment and bring a copy of your paperwork with you. But I warn you, you are going to have to have pretty much direct, not circumstantial evidence, of discrimination.

So much for “educat[ing] a skeptical country, which at present is indifferent, when not hostile.”. The nation is not “indifferent”. 85% of this country is currently AGAINST reparations. Plus, since your post, the Supreme Court’s decision ending affirmative action has come down indicating “race based” is out. Now you can argue til the cows come home that reparations would be “lineage based”, not race based, but that ain’t going to fool anyone. It would be legislation that applies exclusively to black Americans. That is race based. Even if, by some miracle a reparations bill got through the legislature and signed by the elected authority, a lawsuit would be filed on Constitutional grounds so fast it would make your head spin. It would then run through the courts for a few years only to wind up in front of THIS Supreme Court, which has already said it will shut down. You can continue to present your reparations argument as “an outstanding debt,” but know that is an opinion, and not a very popular one, NOT a fact. Many people arguing for reparations don’t seem to understand that. I would love to know how you think black Americans financed our economies. That argument makes absolutely no sense. If you want to pump yourself up believing that, go right ahead, but say it quietly to yourself, so as not to discredit your entire argument with such a preposterous statement. Also, I would love to know what these “collective efforts at self-determination” are that you said black Americans have engaged in and yet, somehow, today 50% of the ADOS have an “average household net worth of zero”. Not very sincere collective effort, is it? And that is somehow everyone else’s fault such that ADOS should each be GIVEN millions of dollars at everyone else’s expense? It’s ridiculous. But here’s a tip going forward. Should you ever get another “15 minutes” of national attention, next time you might want to go into it with some actual leadership and a cohesive platform and plan. Do people really think the trick to solving the homeless problem is to simply find housing for them. We know that a large % of homeless people suffer from mental illness. How many shelters, SROs, and the like have the homeless been housed in, only to leave that housing within days of arrival because the do not want to comply with rules and regulations, preferring to do what they like on the street. We also know that the mentally ill are often episodically violent, which creates further unsafe situations. I wonder if people realize how the mental health system works. If someone is over the age of 18, there are few ways to contain or control them if they are mentally i’ll. they can be taken to a hospital on a psychiatric hold, but good luck trying to get the hospital to keep them longer than 3 days the psych wards are so full. Additionally, mental health treatment = medication; medication that makes the taker feel awful. Many simply stop taking the meds, and unless a conservatorship is established, no one can force them to take medication. I don’t see how this situation is going to get better.

We live in a society that provides each member of it with an awful lot of perks others elsewhere in the world do not have. In exchange for all those perks, each of us owes a duty to the society, to the whole. A society can not function without rules that people must follow for the good of both the individual and the whole. Without enforcement of those rules, there is little point to having them, as we KNOW that people can not be trusted not to break those rules without consequence to themselves. Therefore, WE, the whole, employ people who’s job it is to enforce the rules, ie police. WE endow them with the authority to detain for investigation and arrest for violation of the rules. The cops work for you, for me, for that idiot, because the successful operation of our society depends on it and we, in turn, depend on society. This fool violated the law. When pulled over to be held accountable for that, he acted like an entitled, spoiled little brat, refusing to follow the officer’s instructions or even be polite communicating. This piece of crap is why we NEED police in the first place!

What I said was, How would you expect them to act amidst all this vitriol hurled their way and the often hyperbolic accusations that TOTALLY IGNORE the actions of the suspect/detainee? Try a little empathy here. Let’s say you are a cop. Every morning you get up, put the uniform on, say goodbye to your family, and head off to work. But you know that because you wear that uniform, the minute you walk out that door, you are a potential target for violence or even death. Why? Because people have decided that anyone who wears your uniform is a violent racist pig out to get about 13% of the population; to hurt and/or kill them for no other reason than they are a member of that 13%. That’s what people are being told about you; that you are a violent sociopath who wakes up every morning hoping you’ll get to hurt or kill somebody. YOU know that’s not you, but that doesn’t matter because that’s how people perceive you because of that narrative.
Knowing all of the above, you begin your day policing, ie doing your job. You respond to calls from people who need help often putting yourself in harms way. Every time you encounter a member of the public, you can’t be sure whether or not they believe the narrative that because you wear the uniform, you are a vicious pig. That member of the public, who it is your job to engage with, may already HATE you and wish you harm. Wouldn’t you be alert and guarded knowing that? And if the member of the public was immediately uncooperative and making furtive movements, wouldn’t your already active defenses increase? Of course they would. You see that is how this dynamic is a self perpetuating cycle.

Citizens need to be absolutely respectful and cooperate with law enforcement, if they’ve done nothing wrong, for the good of everyone. I too hqv watched the videos and in almost every videos I’ve seen, it was the suspect/detainee who needlessly escalated the situation by being entirely disrespectful and refusing to cooperate if not down right resisting. Or better still, they immediately start telling the cop what they will and will not do. What the hell do they expect acting that way? A cop has a right to go home at the end of the day just like everyone else. Acting the fool only increases the officers perception of risk to himself and others. How many cops have died for giving people the benefit of the doubt? A lot. The onus MUST be on the law abiding citizen to be respectful of, if not the individual, then the uniform and what they are there to do for all our sakes.
What bothers me the most are these people going around telling others NOT to cooperate with cops, that they don’t have to identify themselves or show ID. It is pure nonsense and it is getting people hurt or killed. I can’t tell you how misguided and….well…..stupid that advice is. It has nothing to do with being subservient. It has to do with understanding that we, as members of society, endow cops with authority to do their very difficult jobs. WE PAY them to do what they do, so the rest of us don’t have to. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed the ever growing numbers of sociopaths in our society, but I have and I’m grateful the cops are there to deal with them so, hopefully, I don’t have to.
The defund the police campaign had to be one of the dumbest, most poorly thought out campaign I’ve seen. It’s only accomplishment has been to whip up the far left into a vacuous froth and to drive cops off the force in droves. It actually has accomplished the opposite of its apparent objectives. It called for better educated, kinder gentler (which comes with education) police who triple as officers, social workers, and psychiatrists in dealing with the public. What they’ve gotten is a wave of resignations and retirement papers from experienced officers who obviously believe the idea of going to jail for doing your job simply isn’t worth it. Now, departments all over the country are LOWERING the requirements for applicants just to fill the empty slots. It will result in less educated, less experienced cops, NOT the other way around.

The truth is “All have been wronged and all have been guilty.” I actually looked at the curriculum of the AP class DeSantis banned, and while I am not a fan, it was essentially teaching CRT as a “truth”. That fiction won’t help anyone I’m afraid. I admit I am surprised at your age. By 60 I would think the incredulity would have given way to clarity and understanding. If you live in Europe. perhaps you were not aware of just how bad the education system in this country has become. In many states, less than 50% of the students in high school reach the proficiency level in english and math. They have the attention span of gnats and can’t focus on one thing for more than 30 second ones at a time. They pick up “talking points” but have no context from which to question them. And we are moving AWAY from education in this country. The youth would prefer to let other people do the thinking and spoon feed them the conclusions. They hold try he world libraries in the palms of their hands, but they’d rather take self-serving opportunists word for things than expend the 30 seconds it would take to even google a subject they’re not familiar with. I have a rare make and model car in my garage worth $300,000 I can sell if the stand doesn’t work. If I knew when I told you that the car was actually a common clunker worth no more than $300. Have I defrauded you to get you to loan me the money? In your analysis there’s no foul if I pay you back the full $100,000+ the agreed upon interest amount, right? But what if the stand doesn’t work? What if I blow all the money in Vegas? And I stop paying you back? What is your recourse? No point in suing me (which is really expensive), because I don’t have it? Now let’s say YOU are a bank. You’re have now lost $100,000. Do you what happens next? The bank doesn’t eat the loss, it raises their account fees by a nickel for every customer. OR, if there’s a big enough loss and the bank looks as though it will go insolvent (not enough to pay depositors all of their money), the government will use TAX PAYER dollars to bailout the bank. THAT is why our society has deemed that behavior ILLEGAL! Let’s say we knew each other and I came to you and asked if I could borrow $100,000 to start a dog grooming business. In exchange, over a period of time, I will pay you back the $100,000 + an additional 20% ($20,000), for a total of $120,000. What would you want to know? If I’m going to realistically be able to pay you back, right? I tell you, “Don’t worry, even if the dog grooming business fails, I have rare make and model car in my garage that’s worth $300,000 that I can sell and pay you back.”. What if, however, I know that the car in my garage is not the rare year and make I told you, but is considered just a common old used car I might be able to get $5,000 for on a good day? Would you think what I did in that instance was wrong? You might not loan the money to me for 20%, but might for 30%, right? So let’s say the grooming business doesn’t succeed and i stop sending the monthly loan payments. You then find out I lied and have no way to pay you back. Now if you were a bank that was now out $120k, what would you do? Eat the loss? Or add .25 cents to your bank fees and get your account holders to make up for the loss. THAT is one reason, we as a society decided to make that kind of misrepresentation ILLEGAL. Not only if the the loan goes south, but just illegal, period. The argument that “There is no victim, so there is no crime” is just silly. Even sillier is the argument that “It doesn’t matter what info you put on a loan application and people make it up all the time”, is just plain stupid. Let’s not forget that when one signs a loan application oran IRS form, they are attesting that the info contained therein is true and correct to the best of the signator’s knowledge and is signed under penalty of perjury!! If it made no difference what you wrote down, why would that be required??

That would have been stupid. 4) There WAS NO bad policing here, only a bad and foolish suspect. It’s not the cops that have the problem, it’s the idiots who not only choose to break the law, but simply refuse to accept responsibility when they get caught. Are mistakes sometimes made? As risky and volatile as policing is, I would be shocked if they weren’t made. Are innocent people sometimes wrongfully suspected? Bound to happen. But isn’t that a small price to pay for the well being and protection of society as a whole? If a suspect is innocent, is there any good reason for them not to cooperate to clear that suspicion? 5) But what can not be tolerated is this utter lack of respect for the law and those who risk their lives to enforce it FOR ALL OF OUR SAKES!! The utter hubris and entitlement of these brats thinking they can tell cops what they will and will not do, who smack talk officers and refuse instruction, who are dumb enough to believe these irresponsible laypeople with their own agendas who have filled their heads with erroneous interpretation of laws and “rights” are the reason for incidents like this.

@josflorida5346 But Jos, at least for the time being, we are a democracy. WE, the people, ARE the government. We set the parameters or perhaps it’s better said we decide what we will tolerate. To do that effectively, however, it is incumbent upon us NOT to buy the circuitous political rhetoric spread by those who wish to ultimately fill their own pockets. Maybe it’s just too late and maybe we’ve dumbed ourselves down beyond saving. But the idea that republicans are about anything but maintaining an environment which fosters their own interests (increasing their own personal wealth), defies logic. Look at the juvenile tactics they are using to block all legislation. Trickle down economics doesn’t work, at least for 80% of our population. NO ONE needs a billion dollars. And if we allow a few to amass a huge % of the money generated in our economy, we will necessarily sacrifice democracy. To blame “the government” for all our ills is a cop out that Americans seem to think relieves them of the responsibility for what we’ve become. It’s all the governments fault, but WE CHOOSE the government. Our current state is a product of a “”not my problem” attitude we’ve developed. Let someone else deal with it, but in the meantime we will just complain about it. We can’t seem to see the Forrest for the trees. If we want to resurrect our democracy, we as a people, NOT as individual party members, must stand together and say “We will not tolerate this dishonesty and mediocrity from ourselves or from our government.” Divided, as we are, we will lose the battle and 5% of our population will have 90% of the wealth in this country, while inflation rises and the rest of Americans’ standard of living falls. Remember, a system has only as much integrity as it’s players.

Descriptive terms (like terms of color) are becoming too all encompassing. I also happen to believe that right now the pivotal descriptive grouping in our society is “the haves vs the have nots;” the monied vs the non monied. The economic stratification in this country is threatening the very foundation of our democracy and it will be too late to save it if we don’t do something about THAT now. I hate to tell you this but cotton was only a chief export for about 50 years. Even then then the southern agricultural states competed with the industrializing northern states that were largely worked by european immigrants under grueling conditions. YOU didn’t build this country. How could you? You’ve never been more than 13% of the population. America is the great melting pot. We ALL made it what it is today. The 49 acres and a mule Field Order issued by General Sherman was to be a temporary solution to the newly freed slaves so they could feed themselves. How do we know it was temporary? Because if it were meant to be permanent, the US would have fought the bloodiest war in history just to HAND emancipated slaves the states of FL, GA, NC, SC, and AL. Now why in gods name would ANYONE do that? As for the notion of free labor, it wasn’t. Slave owners, over and above the initial investment, provided food, shelter, clothing, medical, etc for their slaves. That was more than the industrial workers in the north could count on from wages, so that is a misrepresentation.
You are also forgetting the TRILLIONS of dollars spent specifically to help black americans over the last 60 years since the civil rights act.
I get that YOU FEEL entitled, but after the last three years of enduring violent protests, fictionalized narratives, in our face, baseless accusations of racism and indoctrinated hate, it’s a wonder you still have the chutzpah to ask!

You say it is a debt that is owed, but make no mistake, you are asking people who have done nothing to you to pay it. This after TRILLIONS of dollars have already been pumped into black communities in the form of programs, subsidies, affirmative action, and the like since the mid 60s. I hate to tell you this, but the vast majority of americans today are all pretty much in the same. There is an enormous cavern between the “haves” and the “have nots”. Did you know that three people in this country, that’s 3 INDIVIDUALS, control more than 50% of the wealth in this country? 10% of our populations controls 90% of the wealth, and the top 1% of them control 90% of the 90%. In other words, 70% of Americans are currently living paycheck to paycheck, while the top 10% make money to burn. It could be argued that this is the natural progression of a capitalist system, but for our purposes it shows you that this “generational wealth” notion may have been true for a period in our history there, but not anymore. I’m afraid the reparations window of opportunity closed some time ago.

@brelenyoungblood1525 Do you know what the 4th Amendment was originally written to protect against? Goes back to when we were a British colony on the road to independence. It was never intended to make it easier to be a criminal. It’s not meant to shield them for gods sake. The modern interpretation is meant to protect innocent people from our own government’s UNWARRANTED intrusion. The purpose of the police is to.prevent the same unwarranted or illegal intrusion of each other or to detain and possibly arrest those that have wrongfully treaded on a fellow citizen. Without enforcement of laws, there is little point to having laws at all. But how do you suppose the laws are to be enforced if the cops are not allowed to so much as ask an individual a question and to expect an answer? Cops were notified of someone acting weird wearing a full face black ski mask at night in the middle of August. Stop right there. Be the cop, sitting in the car, getting that call from dispatch. Just at that moment, what would you be thinking? Would you think it was odd? You then see the person in the mask walking down the street. You open the window as the car stops and yell to the masked person to stop. The masked person acknowledges hearing you but keeps walking, yelling back that he is going home. What are you thinking right there? Remember, race has 0 to do with this because you don’t know what race they are with the full face mask. Furthermore, you have no idea how old this person is because you can’t see his face ( assuming you can even tell he’s male at this point by his voice). You get out of the car, cross the street, and literally have to intercept the person to make him stop. The minute you touch him, he starts resisting you, trying to keep going and get away from you. Now what are you thinking? At that moment, what are you thinking? The masked person keeps struggling with you saying he didn’t do anything and he’s just going home but he will not stop struggling. Now I’m assuming I don’t have to point out that it is a universal truth that people caught doing wrong RARELY if EVER fess up and tell the truth. I say this because, as a cop, if you took the masked resister’s word for it and let him go because he said he wasn’t doing anything wrong, you wouldn’t be a very good (not to mention intelligent) cop, would you? Wouldn’t HIS BEHAVIOR make you suspicious? The problem is I think that in many states, and I know in mine, “resisting arrest” is embedded in the “obstruction of justice” statutes. In most states it IS a crime to OBSTRUCT a police officer in the execution of their duty (in general terms, however it’s worded). One of their primary goals is crime PREVENTION, yes? Their duty is to INVESTIGATE and PREVENT as well as to ARREST and hold for trial. If you refuse to answer basic questions, you ARE obstructing their investigation, at which point you are subject to arrest and, if you continue to resist after that, you are then “resisting arrest,” see? Resisting IS the crime.

He said “I’m different” AND he said “I’m taking back my power.” He was not speaking coherently and it took 3 officers to restrain him. I’m sorry but those are classic symptoms of pcp. The cops weren’t “trying” to get a drug arrest. They were just investigating the report of a person in a full face mask in august acting strangely (and yes, that is what the caller said). All the cops wanted to do was talk to him but the kid immediately tried to keep walking and talking strangely. Remember, the cops know absolutely nothing about him except what they personally perceived of him at that moment. What else could they think? What would you think in their shoes? And let’s not forget the whole thing went down really fast. No time for contemplation. For all the cops knew he was high out of his mind and capable of anything in his irrational state.
Also, to clarify: A call is made to 911. Officers are told to look for dude in mask acting strangely I. E. INVESTIGATE a 911 call. Kid immediately refuses to stop and isn’t making sense. At that point, he is obstructing their investigation which IS a crime, committed in the officer’s presence, thereby allowing officers to arrest on the spot. When the kid continues to resist, that is resisting a lawful arrest. But to tell you the truth, it actually becomes a welfare check/mental health matter on contact. The officers, based on the kid’s behavior, reasonably thought the kid was jacked up on a substance. (Remember, high in public or under the influence is a crime as well. But at that point they have to figure out whether to 5150 him to a hospital for a 72 hour hold. Regardless, the cops CAN’T just let him go if they think he could be a danger to himself or others.

Are you trying to say those practices were wrong, based on ignorance and fear, and people got hurt because of them. AGREED in spades! But a history of discrimination is not exclusive to black people in this country. Hell, this country was founded and built by people fleeing discrimination. Are there people today who fear and thus hate people different from themselves? ABSOLUTELY. It’s usually borne of ignorance and poor education and moral guidance ( and we are making it worse now with our pathetic education system today, making me fear there is just more of the same coming). Need I remind you that probably the largest group discriminated against in this country, namely women, were thought to be too stupid to have the vote until just 100 years ago and they certainly weren’t socially allowed to work until the womens’ liberation movement in the 1970s. There was no precedent for it, but many women fought hard and endured hideously demeaning attacks and hateful rhetoric, but they persevered and look at the situation now? Women are on the road to equality with the opposite sex (perhaps on the road to taking over), but the fight continues. I have to tell you though, it always makes me chuckle when I see a black male decrying racial discrimination and demanding equality in one sentence and referring to women as bitches and hos in the next. Huh? I guess my point is this: The past is the past. Done and over. The present and the future is all there is to come. We need to stop this historical divisiveness and come together as Americans looking forward to the game changing, dangerous waters ahead of us. I have always believed there is no greater unifying force in man greater than common suffering with a common enemy. We need to get ready to face serious perils ahead together as Americans, not individual warring factions. That makes us incredibly vulnerable to outside influences. Serious, serious decisions about who WE ARE as AMERICANS are going to have to be made. (For example: IMMIGRATION. Climate change WILL cause incredible GLOBAL migration. How far will we go to “protect” our borders? Will there be soldiers posted on a wall with orders to shoot to kill to prevent illegal crossings? That question is coming). We are Americans first, right? Before we are black, white, brown, yellow, green, purple Americans, right? Before we are lower, middle, or upper class Americans? Before we are male or female Americans, right? If we don’t start seeing things that way soon, all of this dialogue could be meaningless. We WILL ALL LOSE as Americans.

Regardless of popular rhetoric these days, black Americans do not have a corner on the suffering market and should stop acting like they do. The question then becomes, why should they get special treatment, much less be compensated by everyone else, for things that were true but are no longer? Seems a bit disingenuous, doesn’t it? As for women in American history, are you saying that middle and upper class women were denied the opportunity for independence and autonomy as a privilege? You must be joking! Yes poor women ( and children for that matter) were exploited by having to toil 12 hours a day for subsistence wages just to put food on the table, but that was true for all poor Americans, not just black Americans. Being poor sucks! That’s been true from the beginning of civilization. But I caution you, hell comes in many forms. Be careful about assuming the hell you know is worse than the hell you don’t. Remember, many of the migrants crossed the border illegally and therefore didn’t check in with anyone. We gave Trumpty Dumpty $15 BILILION and he basically just reinforced existing barriers and put up more along the border in the middle of the desert. Total, they say there is 400 miles of barrier (guess it didn’t work so well). Our southern border s 3,500 MILES and the northern border is 5,000 MILES. This rhetoric has all been a political game. We have NEVER had a “closed border” the way you think, nor would it be possible at this point. All this “open border” nonsense has been a lie. Come on Ben. You know as well as I do that lawyers are a big part of what’s happened to our country. What’s the point of having ethical codes for lawyers if they don’t follow them and nothing happens when they’re ignored? What lawyer would honestly believe it’s ok to use the law to accomplish the opposite of it’s original intention? The erosion of ethics and integrity has been happening for decades in the legal community to the point where a license to practice law has become a license to steal from people. The legal profession sold out for cash quite a while ago when it started down this slippery slope. A blind eye was turned to such behavior and the price of that decision is the chaos we are seeing now. The fact is only a small percentage of our population can even begin to afford justice today. The deeper pocket will always win in the civil arena. Why? Because lawyers will abuse discovery rules or paper the other side until they run out of money. Every motion, no matter how ridiculous, must be answered adding thousands of dollars to the client’s bill. And when the client has spent their last dime, only then will they discover the endeavor was pointless from the beginning. What does that have to do with justice? Isn’t that what the “code of ethics” was supposed to prevent? And lawyers have gotten away with this over and over again and nobody talks about it, let alone does anything. A “good lawyer” today is one who cheats better than others; one who is willing to compromise their integrity, if they have any at all, and does anything to win. They get away with it largely because lay people don’t understand the legal system well enough to articulate what’s happening and god knows the lawyers aren’t going to explain it to them as their culpability would be revealed. The profession has become a disgrace. Yet the lawyers are getting off virtually scott free in Trumps legal battles. It’s the lawyers who should be crucified for what they did. They knew better and they helped the fascist, giant orange duck, Baby Huey, perpetrate his frauds. If you disagree, may I point your attention at the highest court in the land. Our legal system is part of the cess pool we are drowning in now. Nothing can change until we hold people accountable for lying, cheating, and stealing again and it starts with the lawyers.

In order to genuinely examine history, you must understand it in its correct context. For example, do you realize that in 1850, life in this country was downright primitive by what we’re used to today. Survival was the objective for the majority. FSC - food, shelter, clothing was the aspiration of the many. Do you know what the conditions for the european immigrant industrial workers in the north were like during the mid-to late 1800s? It was no picnic. They often worked 12+ hours per day just to feed their families and put a roof over their heads and often even that wasn’t enough. Why? Because there were no unions, no job protections. If you didn’t like your wages, move aside because there was a line of workers around the block who would do the work for even less. The fact is, some slaves in the south enjoyed a better standard of living than those northern workers. They were provided food, shelter, clothing, because they were an asset to the plantation owner. Were there inhumane, horrible slave owners? Of course. There are horrible people in this world at all times. Period. But understand the context 360 degrees, before forming your opinion.

I just find it very frustrating seeing the same words and phrases repeated over and over with no understanding. There really is no excuse for it these days. We all have smart phones we stare at for hours out of any day. Most of the words and phrases could at least be familiarized by simply googling them for a minute or two, but no one seems to bother. I also find it frightening that people seem to think the solution to the migrant crisis is as simple as “send them back”. It isn’t. For one thing, many can’t go back to where they came from or they will face likely death. What would you do in that position? This issue is far more complex than that. There are jurisdiction issues, funding issues, political issues, logistical issues, not to mention moral issues, all intertwined. But the most ridiculous lie I hear again and again is that ANYONE “voted” for this. We are seeing numbers at the border many, many times more than we have ever seen before in this country. It’s happening in countries all over the world. Not just the US. It’s a product of climate change, war, the rise of violent criminal enterprises, corrupt governments, extreme poverty and hunger. This has nothing to do with voting. And the reason Chicago is messed up is because the governor of Texas has been tricking migrants onto buses in TX, not telling them where they are actually going, and then dumping them in Chicago, with NO warning to to anyone. He’s been dumping them with no money and often no english language skills. He has done this with thousands and thousands of people, human beings. He’s done it in most major urban areas. It’s deplorable. Anyway, I apologize for my tone before.

How are they succeeding? They’ve kept a lot of people alive, but clearly they are not the solution, nor were they meant to be, but rather were thought necessary to sustain life.

You said black slaves arrived in chains against their will. But it wasn’t white people who enslaved them. They were already slaves belonging to various tribal leaders. The tribes were the ones who first “sold” American slaves. You can dispute this if you want, but history says otherwise.
I can’t imagine how anything I do or don’t do could possibly be blamed on the black americans!
What I’m trying to tell you is the US is not going to give black americans “reparations” as they are being demanded now, because 1) it would solve nothing and 2) the numbers are just not there. You all would have had a much better shot if you had formed coalitions with other groups and taken an entirely different approach. The hysterical and entitled way the progressives have approached it, only hindered the cause. I wish I knew whose brilliant idea it was to attack and insult all non-black people in the endeavor. They know very well the spirit and the purpose of the law, but they manipulate the language in the law to argue irrelevant justifications for their actions. For example, let’s say there is a law in a hypothetical jurisdiction that says “Before a company can begin construction on a new commercial building, the company must hold an open meeting at which other owners in the community may come and voice their support or concerns about the proposed building and how it may effect their businesses. The company schedules that meeting for 7:00 pm on Christmas Eve. A couple of Company execs go to meeting place on XMas eve and only 3 community members show up. A short presentation is made and everyone goes home. In January, construction of project begins and the community members go to court to stop construction based on the fact that the company has not complied with the community hearing law. Has the company broken the law? Technically? No. But the intent of the hearing requirement, the reason for including it in the first place, has obviously, deliberately been violated, but the company hasn’t “broken” the law. You see that’s why ethics are so important in a democracy. Our founding fathers constructed a brilliant legal system made up of multiple checks and balances designed to ensure against undue discretion and power of any one party, one person, one company, one group. In order for the systems to function as intended, it is presumed that the people working in those systems will do so honestly and without cheating or manipulating for the very purposes they were designed to prevent. We seem to have lost sight of the necessity of ethics these days in favor of a cheating culture. Don’t buy this BS from Schultz. He knows exactly what he has done and is doing. I assure you, Average working Americans are NOT on HIS mind.

Violent crime is rising quickly and need we mention the overwhelming number of school shootings and massacres often by kids with AR-15s.? You, with 30 years law enforcement experience, I would trust in possession of a gun. But 99.99% of the rest of this country? Absolutely not. Can’t be trusted. Most of them have the sense god gave a chicken and, frankly, I will never believe it’s necessary to be packing on a weekly trip to Applebees! Let’s face it, it’s a shitshow out there. But one thing I am absolutely sure of is that Baby Huey, I mean, The Donald, was the catalyst that has plunged us into a cesspool of narcissism, greed, and lies; Principles are malleable, integrity is for suckers, and the ends justify the means. Democracy teeters on the edge as we move into the UNCHARTED territory that is the new technological world. I can’t help think we are lost if we follow those void of ethics and conscience into the new world.
BTW, I am really sorry for all the crap law enforcement has taken the last few years. To my knowledge, especially in major urban areas, veterans like yourself are putting in their papers right and left and who can blame them? @LoreEclectic Wrong. That is not manslaughter. The officers have the authority to contact a suspect and ask questions. This boy was told to stop. He didn’t. He was intercepted and began resisting. The officers repeatedly told him to calm down and stop struggling but he refused. When they tried to move him from the sidewalk to the grass, the boy struggled harder. That is the reason this whole thing went down. But for the boys actions resisting, the cops would have asked him questions, realized the kid was cognitively impaired and let him be on his way. The officers did not create that situation, the boy did by his choices. Additionally, there is no definitive cause of death so it can’t be said that any one action resulted in death. It was likely a synergistic effect, forces combining. Now the paramedics apparently simply listened to the officers account of previous events instead of talking to the boy himself before administering the Ketamine, which would seem to be negligence at this point, but essentially, this was a terrible accident. No one wanted to hurt that boy or bore him any ill will. They were doing their jobs. They didn’t create the need to restrain the boy. The boy created that situation. If the EMTS and cops did those jobs negligently, that will be dealt with in civil court. But to charge these individuals criminally is just plain wrong. The real culprits here are those who, to push a political agenda, instilled fear of all law enforcement in this boy and those that did not advise him not to resist the police.

@maxjulianc Not a chance. If you watch the whole encounter, you should understand. The cops did NOT run up on him. They got a call to respond to a report of someone “suspicious”, wearing a full, black ski mask, in Denver, in AUGUST, walking down the street making strange movements. They were initially driving the opposite way when they called to him from their car. He ignored them and kept walking. They U-turned, stopped and called to him to stop as they were getting out of the car. He ignored them and kept walking. They approached him and told him to stop again. Again he ignored them. They then stood in front of him and told him to stop. He continued to ignore them and tried to continue walking, saying “I’m just going him” over and over as they asked him questions. They then physically prevented him from continuing forward but he would not stop. As they were standing on the sidewalk blocking pedestrian traffic, the cop told him they needed to move onto the adjacent grass area. THEN the boy started actively fighting them. His behavior was entirely consistent with one who is guilty of something and high as a kite. The cops COULD NOT have known he was on the spectrum. The boy had obviously been indoctrinated with this fear, but lacked the mental ability to read the situation and act accordingly. That’s not his fault, but it’s not the cops fault either as they had no way of knowing. So whose fault is it, ya think? How about those who looked after him? THEY got that poor boy killed!

However, through the years, I have come to realize that things are rarely as they appear to be. What’s underneath matters most. In short, all that glitters is NOT gold. For me, a successful military dictatorship would require faith in the humanity of the dictator. I also know that “celebrity”, used broadly here, should be recognized as a bonafide mental disorder in the DSM VII when it’s published. It’s a disorder that alters peoples’ brains and is caused by people blowing too much smoke up one’s ass, too much and too often. The individual starts to believe the praise and deference are inherently warranted, instead of being driven by opportunism on the part of sycophants. Hubris takes over and perverts reason. I can’t support a military dictatorship, or any dictatorship, because I just don’t have enough faith in any one person NOT to succumb to the deluded sense of self. They come to the border with only what they can carry because they could not stay and survive where they were due to climate change, extreme poverty, and/or violence. It’s not going to stop. I guess my point is that our way of life is changing. I try to remind myself not to resist the change but to go with it. I don’t think we have a choice. We can’t go back. All the bridges are burned. @territarheel5163 I agree that the welfare system has not worked. It was intended to keep people afloat during hard times but became a way of life instead. We have to find another way. The problem is that system is now reality for a % of our population.
I’m a bit hard core on the education front. I think it started going down hill when, unfortunately my generation, as two income families began to rise, came up with parenting techniques like “time outs” and slogans like “Everyone’s a winner”. We began the coddling, which led to entitlement. It appears parents don’t discipline their kids anymore, they “talk” to them. This spread over into the schools to the point today when it is unlawful to discipline students for “willful disobedience”. How I see it is this: If you don’t discipline your child, your child will not learn self-discipline. Without self-discipline, they can not focus or concentrate. Without focus, they can not learn. And if they can not learn, they will not understand, or develop empathy, or be able to solve problems. We do these kids no favors allowing this entitlement.
Where does that responsibility to discipline lie first and foremost? The parents. Now I realize that many parents today, had little guidance, much less discipline in their own childhoods, but that can not be an excuse. Hell, they signed up to be parents, they MUST step up and do the job. If they don’t know themselves, then they need to learn. But this indulgence is crippling children and turning them into entitled brats. Plus, I would like to know who is going around telling kids that life is supposed to be “fair”?

@philliplewis3754 . Quite the opposite. This one, likely, ain’t even worth a settlement. You are assuming these claims of “harassment” are true. The fact that they had an arrest warrant, signed by a judge, means that the alleged victim and at least one other person have given sworn statements, under penalty of perjury, that say this guy shot one of them with a BB gun. The victim would also have visible evidence that the incident took place with the physical wound it caused. Once the arrest warrant is signed, the cops’ job is to execute (arrest) the suspect. They don’t have any say over that. That’s what they have to do.
I do t know who told you that cops “HAVE to tell you WHY immediately,” but they lied or really had no idea. That is not true and same goes for having to say a specific thing when they approach a suspect. But more importantly, your assumption that those things are determinative of anything is a common misconception. For example, people often think that if a cop doesn’t read a suspect their Miranda rights as they are being arrested, the case gets dismissed. NOT TRUE. Dismissal is an extreme remedy for violation of procedure. There are many other remedies for violations that usually apply.
Plus, remember, the attorney won’t get paid unless they win or settle.

It’s what they chose to do followed by the consequences of those actions that society (through elected officials) has deemed appropriate. I assume you have in mind the federal sentencing guidelines disparity between powder cocaine and crack. I don’t know how old you are, but if you weren’t around in the mid-80s when crack hit the streets, I gotta tell you, it took hold really fast and just devastated people’s lives. You would see some one in March, and by the next time you saw them in May, they would hardly be recognizable. Had lost everything, we’re homeless, like walking zombies. Not. To mention it turned street violence way up. In response, they upped the ante for traffickers. Dumb idea, but they were trying to curtail the spread of it. Had you been faced with deciding what to do, what would you have done yourself about the explosion of crack?

@fredh8065 That’s not discrimination, it’s the American way. We worship money in this country. The all mighty dollar above all else. Funny thing is, an abundance of money will screw you up just as much as not enough of it, and yet still we cry “Mo’ Money, Mo’ money.” I’m afraid the regions you refer to don’t generate the same property taxes which in turn fund the public schools, parks, etc. You may see fancy cars and new Nike’s but the source of that money is key. Does that money come from earned income, government assistance or criminal activity. We live in a cheating culture today. The mentality is “Get Yours any way you can.” Do you realize the estimate is over $11 billion in fraudulent unemployment benefits were paid out over the last year and a half in the state of CA alone? That’s people making false claims for unemployment benefits. Over $11 billion in one state. And those same people bitch about schools and investment dollars. Really? Which is more unfair? I don’t think you are proposing that banks or corporations should be told who they HAVE TO do business with. If you owned a bank, would you want to be told who you HAD TO extend credit to? I think not. We subscribe to the free market; capitalism. Maximization of profit. We believe market forces like supply and demand will provide boundaries. It’s a theory we seem to be proving wrong. The problem is, it takes money to make money in this system. 75% of us in this country are living paycheck to paycheck. That leaves just 25% “making” any money. But more importantly, there are a dozen or so BILLIONAIRES in this country (several of whom are black by the way) who are making more and more each year because they have more and more to invest, right? These billionaires aspire to be trillionaires regardless of who or how many go hungry, live in poverty, go without opportunity, or die from lack of accessible health care in this country. If they hoard enough wealth, they will own and thus control everything. No one will have voted for them, no one will care about this group or that group’s complaints because they won’t have to. What they say will go and the rest of us can stuff it. This racial faction if is just feeding into the plan and distracting us from noticing until it’s too late.

@fredh8065 . I think there are a lot of separate issues there that have to be flushed out. I will just say this: The only color that matters in the US is green. We worship it, admire it, and pursue it at all costs. For example, and I do not know these statistics, with respect to banks and lending, the bank cares only about making money and making sure they have a secure investment. They want that principle and interest. So when they lend they want to be reasonably sure the person or business can pay it back. Looks can be deceiving. Id want to see a breakdown of property values, defaults and foreclosures in the area, right? Then of course the borrower’s income, credit history, assets, etc to assess the risk involved in extending the loan. Should a bank HAVE TO approve a risky loan for the sake of diversity? Slippery slope on the free enterprise highway. But again, It’s green is the new white!

@TheVaudevillain During the 2nd half of the 18th century, Haiti became the number one wealth producing colony of France. When they gained independence, however, that wealth production appears to have dried up, leaving Haiti to struggle with intense poverty and economic disparity, not to mention ruthless despots. The country is currently in a state of absolute chaos, hence the 12,000+ Haitians currently parked under the international bridge at the Texas border with thousands more on the way. Question: If Haiti was a key money maker under the French, why wasn’t it productive as an independent nation? From an objective perspective, it would appear that the reparations paid was to reimburse France for its substantial monetary investment in making the colony so profitable, not to mention its investment in governing the colony. We hav got to STOP looking at history with contemporary moral sensibilities. The world was a different place and so much has been scientifically disproven or proven since then. History can be enormously helpful in avoiding the repetition of past mistakes, but it should understood within the context of its time. Otherwise we should also draw conclusions from the fact HAITI, as an economy, failed miserably after the abolition of slavery. Inaccurate conclusions could also easily be drawn from that, right? But they would be half-assed and wrong. It is far more complicated than that.

@bibsp3556 Redlining has been illegal since the advent of the Fair Housing Act in 1968. But here is where it gets shaky. Surely you see how difficult it is to discern definitively what someone is thinking when doing something. I’m sorry but in a country based on the free market, you can’t have people dictating who banks HAVE TO lend too no matter what color they are. They be talk about refusing to lend to black Americans as a consequence of race, again, which has been illegal for the last 50+ years. But surely you see there could be many many other reasons for denying a loan - credit history, income-debt ratio, income amount, etc. They also talk about eminent domain. Well let’s take the Bruce family in Manhattan Beach, CA who had their land made subject to eminent domain over 100 yrs ago. Now the property is estimated to be worth about $20 mil today and there’s a group calling for the County to “return” it to them. Now if that’s all I told you about the situation, given a minimum of facts, you could very well opine that 100+ years ago, the County used eminent domain power to take the Bruce family’s beach front property because they were black and the County wanted them out. But what if I then told you that eminent domain, in the same action, was used to take a total of 30 families property. And what if I then told you that only six of those families were black Americans. That rather changes one’s opinion somewhat, doesn’t it. At the very least it should take out the somewhat hyperbolic, self-righteous indignation about the tale. Don’t you agree?

@Joel-wx7zk Ii think you’re missing the point. This puts no developers at risk who follow the law, only those who cheat and lie as a normal business practice. I wonder if you realize how much damage unscrupulous developers have done to this country. Why do you think we have a shortage of affordable housing today when we have a fair housing act they are supposed to be complying with? They lie and cheat, that’s how. You seem to see this as the equivalent of listing your house for sale for $1,000,000 when it’s market value, established thru comps, is no more than $300,000. In such a circumstance, you can ASK as much for the house as you want. Market reality, however, means most likely no one will buy it at that price because it’s not worth that much. That is NOT this situation. Here, a bank is asking the applicant to list assets that can be sold to pay back the loan if the development project goes belly up. The bank HAS TO know the reasonable value the house can be sold for. In the case of an abandoned development project, they want to know the borrower will still be able to pay back the money and interest he borrowed. You can’t possibly believe that banks do individual appraisals of every piece of property offered as collateral. Do you know how much appraisals cost??

First of all, ketamine has had popular use for decades, medically and recreationally. Ever heard reference to “Special K”? The reason the paramedic administered ketamine, was because from the getgo, the boy wasn’t acting rationally. Neither the cops nor the paramedics had ANY way of knowing about the boys cognitive disabilities. They, NOT unreasonably, assumed the boy was high as a kite. Ketamine, known as a horse tranquilizer, is often used to subdue people on stimulants and narcotics. None of this was intentional on anyone’s part. It all boils down to the idiots that made that boy so terrified of cops, he couldn’t speak to explain or defend or even express himself. THEY are the ones responsible for this and THEY should have consequences. But they won’t. They’ll just say, “I didn’t know he would do that.”. Is that good enough for you? Because it sure as hell ain’t good enough for me! It was THEIR JOB, as his loved ones to keep him safe. Instead they got him killed. Too busy doing what was best for them, I imagine.
