@BriarLeaf00 I was born under Russian occupation with tanks and everything and was forced to grow up under it. When we finally got free, we voted to join the West (EU and NATO) - I know, I was there and voted for it. From your point of view we are a "NATO expansion", "American vassal state / colony". I spent 2 decades under Russia and 3 decades "under USA" and I can tell you our standard of living is 8x higher now, everything is peaceful, I can travel wherever I want (and I do, frequently) and we have real democracy with 50+ political parties and half of them talk sh*t about USA half the time (how would that be possible if we were US colony / vassal state). Some people from the West love to spread bullsh*t about NATO expansion (we VOTED for it!) and us being "American colony" without actually ever being here and every trying to live under Russian occupation.

@@fleshnbone187 Second point: If Russians were the victims then why do significant part of Russian population want to bring back USSR and they constantly mention it in street interviews that it was golden age of Russia and why do they carry Soviet flags even to battle in Ukraine and put them on administrative buildings (I can provide ample evidence). If they were the victims they wouldn't be doing this in 2023. Many even praise Stalin for making Russia strong. Stalin - who murdered more people than Hitler. They were no victims - they were the colonizer, the empire.

@nowwhytwo1636 I still don't understand the point, but yes, Native Americans are definitely the victims of genocide from European colonizers. I don't think anyone disputes that - it's in all history books, and like I said, it's one of the greatest tragedies of world history. I don't understand what you are trying to say in regards to USSR, other than the thing that Russia commited same genocide on Native Asians when white European Russians from Moscow started to conquer, murder and colonize everything in their path in Asia from Moscow all the way to Alaska. Those were native lands, with native people, and they did exactly the same thing to them as European colonizers did to Native Americans.

@@fleshnbone187 Third point: You said that "Russia and the Soviet Union are NOT the same" - In that case immediatelly relinquish the permanent seat in United Nations Security Council. That seat was given to the USSR, NOT Russia! Yet Russia keeps it and the remaining 14 republics get nothing - why? because everyone knows Russia was the USSR, Moscow controlled EVERYTHING and USSR was just their imperial colonial project (just because you don't need seafaring ships to get to your colony doesn't mean it's not a colony, we were all Russian colonies)

Yes, Ukraine is the poorest country in Europe by GDP per capita (which is not a reason for an invasion) and it has many problems, but they achieved something that Russians never did - Ukrainians were able to break the chains of totalitarian dictatorship, stop being sheep and transform into a truly democratic and free country (with lots of problems). They changed their mentality from thinking "government knows best and they are my leaders" to "government are my servants, they represent my will, not heir own personal opinions and they exist only and only because I allow it - they are my SERVANTS they I pay to represent me". This is massive shift in a mindset that did NOT happen in Russia and after 8 years of chaos Russians once again reverted to their old totalitarian mindset and searched for "strong dominant alpha-male leader" (Putin) and they are again in this Czar / Lenin / Stalin / Putin mentality. They want to be ruled. Ukrainians don't. Ukrainians have mentality and values that are much closer to EU than they are to Russia. That's what they achieved since 1991 (your question). Also do not mention corruption in Ukraine, because right now at this moment go search corruption index in Europe and you will find that Ukraine is second most corrupt country in Europe... right after RUSSIA. I've been to both countries - definitely true.

Free healthcare, housing, education, industralization" -- That's like saying that Nazi Germany was not all bad - it had ORDER, low criminality, services worked and everything was well organized, and that "For many, these were vital aspects of life". Yet you do not see Germans being nostalgic about their great empire (3rd Reich), you don't seen Germans running arround with swastika flags, but you see Russians running around with Soviet flags. You don't see Japanese being nostalgic about their great empire. Both these countries transformed... Russia didn't.

It's not about some ideology - it's about rebuilding a lost empire. Exactly the same way as Germany after first world war. They were a great empire and were defeated, humiliated and financial crisis hit - so they decided to rebuild their empire ... and they did, 3rd Reich. Same with Russians today - their empire (USSR) was destroyed, they were humiliated and they want everything back. They want to rebuild their empire - and that's what they are doing in Ukraine annexing territory. It's not about ideology, you are correct... it's about power.

Because any country can choose year in history that is most favorable to it and claim other countries. Crimea is not historically Russian - it is Tatar land that was most of history part of Ottoman Empire / Turkey / Turkic world. Russia just brutally conquered it, killed the Tatars, Stain then force-deported the rest and ethnically cleansed it. So much for "historically Russian lands". ... Also on the historical map that was brought to Putin few days ago as "look, Ukraine doesn't exist on this French map" (where Ukraine was clearly written as Ukraine and had even parts of Russia as Ukraine) they forgot to mention that on that very same map Saint Petersburg is Swedish - as it was historically Swedish territory. You don't want to play this game, because Russia was owned by Mongolia for brutal 240 years. ALL OF RUSSIA is thus historically Mongolian land. Poland existed 600 years before Russia was even a single village. Kyiv is 1500 years old. Do not bring history because it won't end well for young Russia.

@@fleshnbone187 Extracting oil and gas from Asia is half of Russian state budget (google it). Ukraine has no such colonies that they can exploit. Russians didn't rebound from Yeltsin chaos because of their genius, but because of gas and oil from their colonies.

That's exactly what it is. Russia first invaded Asia and brutally subjugated Native Asian population while stealing all their resources (Russia is rich only because of gas and oil from Asia, but all the money goes to Moscow. Have you seen the roads and houses in Siberia? Have you been there? Yet if they sold their own oil and gas they could have been like Saudi Arabia and Moscow would be A LOT more poor). Second they colonized neighoring countries and created USSR colonial empire. In the third wave they colonized eastern half of Europe as their "sphere of influence" (my blood boils when I hear this imperialist colonizer term - as if one country can own another). We in Central Europe were much more developed than Russia or USSR and would have had been doing much better without their occupation. Just look at East Germany vs West Germany in 1990 - same people, same mentality, huge difference in standard of living and overall success. We would be like West Germany and Austria if we were not occupied and ruined by Russia. And the things you mentioned like free healthcare and free education are universally in Western Europe too, without Russian occupation. That's not something that "Russia invented".

@@fleshnbone187 You: "It naturally gets the UNSC seat as the successor since it was the headquarter of the Soviet Union." -- With your logic if European Union falls apart then Belgium (Brussels) will get special seat in the United Nations and be a natural successor to all international treaties with the EU... just because "EU headqarters are in Belgium". That's not it. It's not about headquarters - it's about Moscow being in absolute and total control over all 14 other USSR nations. There was no freedom, no independence, even from occupied colonies outside of USSR. That's why Russia got the UN Security Council seat, because USSR was Russia + their colonies. Russia IS successor to USSR, always was. Russia also bears full responsibility for all the horrors of USSR. It was not some "voluntary friendly club", those countries were CONQUERED BY BRUTAL MILITARY FORCE and added to USSR (right at the formation of USSR, it's in every history book, every wikipedia page, every normal resource - millions and millions of witnesses - this is not some kind of secret).

@StylesEste @StylesEste I see even though you lived your entire life in the US (I assume) you completely understand the situation. My respect. And my condolences for your grandmother, I hope she at least suspected that Lithuania will be free soon. People in the West often do not truly understand what they have (no dictatorship, freedom) because they always had it. It's like people do not value their health and eat unhealthy until they get horrible illness that will wreck their life, and then they realize what is the true value of health. Same with democracy and feedom - a lot of people do not understand the true value of it, that their ancestors had to often literally die for it. Only when they lose all the freedoms they understand it was worth fighting for it at all costs (but by that time it's too late). What baffles me the most is some minority of young westerners even embracing communism and dictatorships that come with it. Or praising every country that is anti-America regardless of totalitarian brutal dictators leading those countries and there being no freedom. As if they were just mental children and don't understand that they would not survive 1 day in such dictatorship (they are usually edgy contrarians, which would get them arrested, tortured and shot in a dictatorship). The problem is that these people vote and influence real policies.

@StylesEste When someone starts to tell me about NATO expansion I show him this list: Countries invaded by Russia in the past 100 years: • Estonia • Latvia • Lithuania • Azerbaijan • Georgia • Moldova • Chechnya • Afghanistan • Romania • Poland • Finland • Ukraine • China • Japan • (not even counting here anything that happened during WW2) • Vietnam • Cambodia • Laos • Korea • Hungary • Czechoslovakia • Egypt-Israel war • Eritrea • Somalia Last 30 years: • Georgia • Moldova • Ossetia • Tajikistan • Chechnya • Chechnya (again) • Georgia (again) • Ukraine • Syria • Central African Republic • Ukraine (again) I wonder why would all these countries want to join NATO. And why has Russia invaded Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine - none of them in NATO and haven't invaded Estonia, Lithuania or Latvia - which they absolutely totally want to, but cannot. Russia can only invade countries that are not under NATO protection, that's why they are so angry about their former colonies joining a protection pact with NATO (and that's the ONLY reason why I voted for NATO membership of my country). But often you cannot explain this to a "NATO expansion biolabs Nazis dirty bomb satanist Ukrainians" type of westerner.

On top of what you say - even if China miraculously conquered Taiwan by brute force (unrealistic, but hypothetically) - this would not be without recourse from the global west. They might unleash economical hell on China and absolute political isolation. ... But that doesn't mean they wouldn't do this obviously stupid invasion. Like invasion of Ukraine was obviously stupid.

@qwkl2450 So you absolutely don't care about fredom and democracy. Because Mongolians are free and democratic - being conquered by Russia or China will take that away from them. Countless millions have died all over the world to gain democracy and freedom, including in my country... and you just throw it away like trash.

They have absolute full responsibility for all the evil of USSR that was equal to Hitler's Germany (Stalin even killed more people than Hitler). And even now in 2023 you see some Russian soldiers in Ukraine wearing and holding Soviet flag. I can show you videos of towns conquered by Russia where they remove Ukrainian flag and put not Russian but SOVIET flag. Also watch street interviews from Russia - many of them want USSR back. Pure evil.

Totally not their fault, they are the victims too. And Hitler was Austrian, so it's practically fault of Austria. - This is your logic but applied to Nazi Germany instead of USSR.

@Tyagi0817 I usually try to keep private, but ... I was born in communist Czechoslovakia. We were "just" a colony of USSR occupied by their tanks and completely under control of Moscow. It was still less brutal than inside USSR (towards the other 14 USSR nations). People from inside USSR were forcibly relocated to Siberia, sent to die in gulags. My grandfather and granduncles were sent only to local labor camps that they actually survived and were released after 3 years (for nothing, we just owned a larger farm that was earned by hard labor from nothing - and they allready called us "artistocratic" and "enemy of the people" - killed quarter of the family, put the rest to labor camps and took everything we ever owned and blacklisted the entire family). And this was the most friendly light version of Russian occupation. Inside USSR they would just kill everyone / work them to death in a gulag. Of course if you were spineless traitor and suck up to them, you would get an important position regardless of your education or abilities. That's why some people are nostalgic for the communist times - they just want to suck up to some oppressive totalitarian government (like Russia and China), be a "good boy" and get treats (that are totally not deserved with hard work or abilities). It's a submissive mentality like that - they are attracted to power and want to serve it.

Even easier, if USA wanted to destroy Russia they would just NOT provide massive massive material support for USSR when they got invaded by Hitler. Stalin himself said they would have lost without material support from USA (which they should not have received as they started WW2 together with Hitler as allies, tearing Europe between Nazi Germany and USSR - perfect example is Poland that was invaded by both as agreed between Ribbentrop and Molotov and then had Red Army + Nazi Germany joint military parade in Poland, their NKVD and Gestapo had joint conferences and supported each other for entire 2 years of the WW2 - Russia should not have received any support at all from USA, but it was necessary, because if Hitler conquered USSR, then he would be able to move all his forces to Western Europe and Allied liberation would not be possible anymore). Russia was incredibly weak, broken and completely dependent on US aid - if USA wanted to destroy Russia/USSR at that point, they would have done it already. Third chance was in 1990s - Russia was collapsing and USA sent a lot of grains so that Russians do not starve (google it). If USA wanted to destroy Russia, they could have just invaded in 1990s or just crush Russia economically to break even further into smaller parts. Last one is 2022 - if NATO wanted to invade Russia, there was absolutely no better time than 24th of February 2022 - Russia invades a sovereign country with 300 000 soldiers in a full scale invasion, United Nations vote where 151 countries of the world condemn it and demand Russia to pull out all soldiers, 34 countries abstain, only 4 support Russia. At that point if NATO invaded Russia, most of the world would understand it - a perfect excuse. Yet NATO nor USA did no such thing. This constant PSYCHOPATIC fear that someone is going to genocide Russia needs professional psychiatric treatment for paranoid disorder.

We don't have dictatorships here, they still do - in 2023. In Russia you ger arrested for protesting with blank paper, in the west you don't get arrest for protesting anything unless you are breaking and burning things. In the west you cannot go to prison for your opinions - in Russia discrediting "special military operaion" with your opinions carries up to 15 years in prison. No, they only look like west in the street but do not have western values or culture.
