  1. The problem is that my actions have very little and very indirect influence on what I really want. There is certainly better and worse things to do, but they're connected to a great deal of uncertainty. It's much easier to motivate yourself if you know that you can do X and get Y. For me it's do X and maybe you have raised your chances of getting Y at some point a little bit.

  3. Exactly, it's extremely frustrating and demotivating. All of the stuff you can work towards gradually isn't really important. What's important for your happiness is your personal relationships. And there is no obvious way of obtaining those. There is just actions that maybe raise your chances a little bit, but you don't know.
