Yeah, take a statistics or cryptography course and it's immediately apparent. Entropy is subjective, it's how I see things and whether I can use them.

What's a "stream" of entropy? Would that work if the sun was all around rather than in one direction?

@noah5491 You're talking past each other because entropy depends on what your information about a system is. "The universe" doesn't just have an entropy in itself. It has an entropy relative to our description of it. When we squint our eyes at the early universe we see a pattern that's only explained by relatively few microstates. A rare pattern.

@beinghimself The problem in all of this is that we seem to inject purely subjective notions like entropy and probability in our description of the cosmos.

If you think anything there is obvious you still don't understand it at all. What is entropy? It's a subjective notion referencing your knowledge. And it supposedly explains plants growing. There's a lot of detail to fill in.

@isaiahmumaw I find it implausible that the universe is not ergodic. Imo similar stuff happens infinite times and nearly all thinkable stuff all happens.

That's a totally backwards way of looking at it. The 2nd law is an observation of just such things as life. It's not a motive force. It doesn't compell things. It describes the circumstance that we often have DECREASE of entropy in one time direction (and hence call it past).
1
That's completely wrong. You are 100% reverseble. All physical laws are time-symmetric.
1
That's wrong. Entropy doesn't always increase. Indeed entropy certainly decreases given an ergodic system. What's weird is that in one time direction entropy decreases quite often. And that's why we call it the past.

The problem is imo that most of the time teachers/profs don't state clearly that entropy is not in a thing itself, but subjective wrt the observer.
1
Nah. What the children do is quite predictable, which means they decrease entropy locally while giving off heat.

Energy is an even more puzzling thing than entropy.
