Anto Rukbo No, the slinky is not a compression spring, but a tether. It won't take anything away from your impact.

Garrett Romine The downward force is always there (gravity), but as the slinky collapses, the elastic force, which counters the gravitational force, is taken away. Thus there is an imbalance of forces and the bottom drops down too.

Thepicdream That's true! That is why it stays still. The slinky stretches out until the elastic force is equal to the gravitational force. So the elastic force is greater, the more it is spread.

Derbert M'Chingstape It is not a compression spring, therefore it collapses rather than pushing the bottom part down immediately. More generally the lower part is held up by elastic forces equal to the gravitational force. As the top part comes down, the elastic forces of the tether decrease (go away) and gravity wins.

Tom Leeds "the bottom is being pulled UP at the same speed that the Middle is falling so that it appears to not move." It's correct until here. But really it isn't falling. The gravity and elastic force are in equilibrium until the elastic forces fade by the collapse of the slinky.
