@billlyons7024 What kind of mental disease is it when you don't care about something and conclude that others don't? Are you also incapable of grasping that other people have different knowledge from yours?
1
I never thought I could be envious of folks being carted off to Nazi death camps.
1
You don't have to. You choose to focus on school shootings in particular. If school shootings are all you care about, arm the kids. Voila, school shootings are no longer possible.
1
@thedarknessthatcomesbefore4279 If you think spree killings warrant taking everyone's rights, you really have ZERO regard for liberty, democracy or the rule of law.
1
Lots of the things that can be done about this are actively prevented by the law. You could train a classifier for child sexual abuse, but it would need a very large ammount of such pictures and videos as input. You could try and entrap perpetrators, which is not possible if you have to remove their content, making them immediately aware that they've been caught. The problem with sacrificing privacy to make it easier to prevent cyber crime is that you can't build a backdoor that only select members of the state have access to. If the system has a weakness, it has a weakness that can be exploited by anyone.
1
Engage what in particular? It's easy to make vague accusations.
1
@Ancor3 It's funny how strongly you assume that the twitter owners are perfect arbiters of truth. Why do we even have a LHC? We can simply ask the twitter CEO about the nature of the cosmos. Besides, Sam is accused of causing the deaths of muslims all the time.
1
Wrong. He has a nuanced view in opposition to the completely motivated thinking that denies the reality of religious motivation altogether.
1
What's bad about "regime change"? And why are you for tyranny "stability" if it's in the middle east? It's weird how democracy and freedom and human rights and all of that stuff suddenly loses its importance when it comes to people not living in Western countries.
1
Lol, no. "Values" arise as heuristics for my future happiness in different situations. What "value" is violated when I poke myself on a cactus? The one of not being in pain? Why does the value of not being in pain come before the simple avoidance of pain?
1
That's not how you solve problems. Ramming your head into a wall over and over again is not the best way to get rid off the wall. You have to look out for your head, too.
1
Anarcho Egoism?
1
The children wouldn't have to run away if you didn't take their guns.
1
I find it great to listen to specifically because of this. They disagree so enormously yet they are able to have a conversation.
1
How many times does the quran revel in descriptions of hell and then call it's god "merciful" directly after? Take a guess. You should, because you're using the word "Islamophobia" seriously.
1
Contentment is just a lower degree of happiness. If you can ever experience mind-blasting orgasmic pleasure, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to do that all of the time.
1
@TheKnowspicker No. If that was the case he wpuld openly oppose religion.
1
Only that exchange probably didn't happen. Einstein (and many other people at the time) did however imagine apocalyptic consequences of nuclear weapons.
1
@Tsax1949 Not really. Whoever survives, they are unlikely to pass on all of the other weapons lying around and going for spears. A gun doesn't starve to death, so they'll be around.
1
Wouldn't say so, but fairly improbable, especially in the long run.
1
@royalzak2670 They have to be, so they can collect money from their fans.
1
It's social media when people talk about each other, but it's not when they talk to each other? That's just silly. Her article was posted on a blog. Articles about people existed long before "social media". If anything "social media" helped them to get into contact for this conversation.
1
Or armed.
1
From what I've seen the audience of Peterson and Harris respectively is extremely critical of them. While I completely disagree with Peterson, there is nothing resembling a "personality cult" around him. People are merely interested in what he has to say or they like that some smart person defends Christianity or the belief in gods (even if it's just in name, not in substance).
1
You interpret things into data that isn't there. You should address the arguments rather than szperficially glancing at redponses.
1
How so? If they are duped, they are duped by someone.
1
Sam can be quite lazily dismissive of places he deems to be insufficiently intellectual in some aggregate.
1
>would it occur to me that a so called bad guy with a gun would try and kill me or people around me Why "with a gun"? I take it that you're not a woman. Ask them how often they worry about bad guys without guns.
1
He's an author and podcast host. It's his job to do this.
1
Americans have a problem with obesity, so just get rid of food.
1
No, because love is often used in other ways such as romantic love.
1
Would you fix a lagging browser with a soldering iron? Before we can make hedonium, we need more indirect ways to create happiness.
1
Yeah it frustrates me that even Sam buys into this. When my father was my age there were actual Moaists among the students demanding the destruction of the West and there were actual Nazis (ex NSDAP) in important positions. And people were more at least as emotional in confrontations as today.
1
How does sth come to still be around?
1
@SilverSurfer5150 No, Peterson doesn't believe in any gods. He just thinks it's good to pretend to. Religious apologists such as yourself should be far more concerned with Peterson trying to redefine your god than Harris confronting your believes directly.
1
@SilverSurfer5150 If you think that you must be completely unable to look beyond appearances. Jordan is an atheist. The "God" he defends has little to do with the one you believe in.
1
He said he wants to invade countries to steal their resources and that he wants to torture people for fun. : |
1
I think this was interesting (when it was first uploaded). I'm not sure how correct he is, but it's still interesting.
1
What's the point in fighting over something everyone agrees on?
1
>Hasn't a huge proportion of mass shootings been carried out using assault rifles No. And the AR-15 is not an assault rifle. And the AR-15 is used bcs it's legal and there's plenty of alternatives.
1
@elbryan9 Ok, but we also have to look at how effective those were.
1
No way. He's interesting, but when you do that regularly, you risk turning into Bill Maher or that guy who didn't know the moon caused the tides.
1
I don't understand what you don't understand, but a world in which everyone carries a gun all the time is a utopia. A 14yo girl can rob you just as well as a gang. You can fend off a 140kg man by yourself. Firearms are the ultimate equalizer.
1
Who is the "we" that controls twitter? People are talking about getting Sam banned for some of the same reasons he wants Trump banned. Now I'm ok with him being banned for consistency's sake, for doxing, etc. But that's clearly not what happened. The best way to address lies about the election is to talk about them in detail, not to call them "lies" over and over again.
1
Has that guy reached out to Sam?
1
"Intelligence" meaning woos me with references to literature.
1
Do you write code? An IDE allows me to easily what part of the program is responsible for an error. I can then fix the problem. Does that mean the piece of code has to have free will?
1
Like all catastrophes it would be adverse to some living things and beneficial to others.
1
If you don't like people talking about him, don't vote for him.
1
Those are different people holding those opinions.
