3:24 What in the world do you mean with "similar rights"? They were enslaved. It's a really popular myth that slavery outside of the Atlantic slave trade was somehow better, but that's just motivated reasoning. Slaves during the middle ages and earlier were at all times subject to horrible torture punishments and rutinely raped and humiliated. Slavery by the Ottomans, Arabs, West African kingdoms or ancient Romans, Persians, etc was not a tiny bit better than slavery in the USA or South America.

@IssasHusband What absolute bullshit. It is immoral not to fight a war to defend victims of oppression and abuse. Your worldview is what facilitates bullies.
3
By that retarded line of reasoning: Why are there such laws?!

@HistoryScope You're categorically wrong and you won't question your assumptions even when you're directly called out. The "amicable" slavery before the transatlantic slave trade is a myth and a very dangerous one.

(Sub Saharan) Africa is way less poor than 20 years ago. People are totally sleeping on this.

@branching123 That's a BASELESS myth. Slaves in Africa were "chattel", they belonged to their masters, were traded among them and horribly exploited, tortured and raped. Both earlier and later individual slaves would end up becoming important figures. That doesn't in any way imply that being a slave was nice or that slaves weren't mistreated.

@goste4 All of what you said is categorically wrong. Enslaving people based on them being from a different ethnic group IS ancient. That's even what the bible itself explicitly prescribes you should do. Ancient cultures DID treat their slaves like chattel. They were traded and at the discretion of their masters. They were routinely raped and "disciplined", ie. tortured. That individual slaves had better lives than others and some came to be important or powerful figures is true for African slaves under the transatlantic slave trade as well. That slaves had various degrees of rights was also true for African slaves in America. And slave owners were also restricted. That "Chattel Slavery gave absolutely no rights to slaves" is categorically wrong. In the American south a slave owner could be held responsible for killing a slave in the same way he'd be as for killing a free person. Your misunderstanding of slavery is extremely dangerous.

@Kaugalunik That's another good point: slavery was continuous through the middle ages. And it was always "chattel slavery". From the earliest texts we have on slavery to classical antiquity to the modern period. In the bible the enslaved Midianite girls are explicitly listed among the chattel.
