The motivations changed, the organizations changed, the weapons, the scale, the unit sizes, the tactics, the battlefields, the impact on civilians, the concern for civilians on both sides, the discipline of the soldiers, who fights, etc. Everything about war has changed radically. At least as much as anything else has changed over time.
