Traditionally that's definitely not what it is. Vipassana meditation is kind of the opposite: to be aware and present in any circumstance, not to be dissolved in an activity. If the diffuse loss of self was all there was, dogs would be enlightened.

The goal of meditation is not to reach an "inner quiet", it is to be aware of whatever is happening. That's also why saying that a hobby is "meditative" is so misleading. Being caught up in an activity is almost the opposite of mindful awareness. That you perceive a "strong inner dialogue" is a good thing. It means your awareness has already improved.

The word "know" implies truth. So, no. You don't "know" that. Maybe you believe that. More likely you wish or pretend you believe that.

@Tahra555 No, praying is pretending to talk to someone, who isn't there. Meditation is the art of dropping pretense and seeing what's actually there in the moment.

@Tahra555 That's exactly the opposite of what people typically mean with meditation: mindfulness/vipassana. Being lost in a task doesn't help you to develop awareness of the mind. Otherwise dogs would all be enlightened. This misconception is also why he thinjs he hasn't been "successful" at meditation, which only makes sense if you think you're trying to conjure some blissed out state as if you had just ran a marathon.

That's just two meanings of a word. Anyways "serious thought" is very much improved by mindfulness. If you're just thrown around by emotions you're not even aware of, your contemplating won't be very fruitful.
