A venomous animal possesses poison, which it injects into other animals, while a poisonous animal possesses poison in general. If you would inject poison from a passively poisonous animal into your bloodstream it would still be damaging, while the poison of a venomous animal, ingested, might not. Further there is a smooth gradient from poisonous (passive users of toxins) to venomous (active users of toxins) animals. From poisonous flesh, to skin, to saliva or spikes to finally fangs or stings.
