Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell

Comments by "Taxtro" (@MrCmon113) on "Происхождение сознания – Как бессознательное стало сознательным" video.
This video is about cognitive functions, not consciousness. It completely misses the point. The question is not why, for example, an inner representation of the world is useful, but why it is experienced. Consciousness doesn't cause anything, it just is. Every explanation that makes it useful for something is fundamentally wrongheaded. By it's nature consciousness must have developed accidentally as a byproduct of something else.

Bingo. The video missed the point entirely.

>The universe knows that it exists, and we are proof of that. No. Two atoms as a system being conscious is different from each atom being conscious on their own. Similarly you being conscious and the "universe" being conscious are different things.

@dragonreborn56789 >non-deterministic, consequential "behavior" does a rock show Rocks are more non-deterministic in their behavior than you are. The decay of their radio-isotopes is as non-deterministic as it gets. >They don't have the ability to make meaningful decisions. "Meaningful" decision is meaningless and if not, then most people aren't making meaningful decisions either. >Computers don't make deliberate decisions, though. They follow deterministic procedure No, they often use random actions. >the programmers made the decisions when they write the program No, otherwise it wouldn't be such a pain in the ass to predict the behavior of a system and test it. Not to mention machine learning.

A soul doesn't explain anything about consciousness, it just adds a further complication.
2
No. Consciousness is the phenomenon of first hand experience. For all we know it is just as present in cats and dogs. In particular it has nothing to do with your pretentious superficialities.
2
Consciousness cannot have been selected for because it has no effects. It must be an accidental byproduct of evolution. The video completely misses the point.

You are conscious is the absence of emotion. You can for example simply feel the chair under your butt.
1
>as a vector rather than a point That's the same mathematically. So your attempt to make your nonsense sound scientific was an own-goal. >constant of nature, rather than a feature of biology Panpsychism or no, you still have to explain why consciousness is one way and not another. >then it becomes clear that its emergence is an inevitability If it's a "constant" it doesn't have to emerge. >The whole universe is... an Egg. It's actually a coffee mug.
1
No, that is not in the least surprising. You are just confused by the presence of pronouns in the English language.
1
Then you don't know what the word "consciousness" means. When you feel hunger, that's consciousness, when you watch a movie, that's consciousness, when you feel your butt on the chair, that's consciousness. No awareness, self, emotions or others required.
1
What sort of "complexity" would help you understand more? >With humanity knowing so little Little compared to what? >it is unreasonable to expect to understand our own existence What does that even mean? Just because you are confused about concepts that doesn't mean you need other hardware to get over it. This video is confused about what consciousness means.

People unconsciously move towards food all the time.
1
I've since slightly changed my opinion. Consciousness can't be a pure epiphenomenon, because we can think and talk about consciousness.
1
So a light switch is conscious?
1
@Red_Neck No. Eg you're conscious while sunk in a movie.
1
@LolLol-pq5fp No, it's not. Ten times of code can be aware that they exist and most people don't think they're conscious. Meanwhile most people aren't aware that they exist most of the time throughout their days, yet we think they're still conscious while reading, watching movies, playing computer games, etc.
1
At least you are addressing the problem unlike the video, but panpsychism just seems like such a lazy copout and there is no reason to believe in it.
1
Consciousness doesn't require any "awareness". You are still conscious while sunk into a movie or computer game. You are conscious in a flow state.
1
@auwa69 It's 100% wrong. A computer program with less than a hundred lines can have "awareness of awareness" and most people don't think it's conscious. Meanwhile, we don't have "awareness of awareness" 99.9% of the time throughout ourlives and most animals never have.
1
You still have to explain why consciousness is like this and not like that, how it comes to conscious experience at different levels. But yeah, I guess some difficulty is avoided if you don't have to decide between happenings that do and such that don't generate consciousness.
1
No. You're still conscious while watching a movie for example. There's no feeling of choice while sunk in a movie.
1
@Billy_D They didn't over-simplify it. They missed the point entirely. They're talking about metacognition and self awareness. It's like being asked about the economy of Tansania and talking about the mating behavior of sloths. It's really completely different.
