That's a bit of a gamble, but the star itself is enough reason to go to Tau Ceti rather than Alpha Centauri. Maybe they just want a sun like star and the one in Tau Ceti is the closest.

@57thorns It's not, but it's much easier to make a habitat fit what you want than make a star like you want it. An earth-like planet around a weird, uncomfortable star is worse than a sun-like star without planets imo. (if you want it sun like).

Didn't watch the Expanse, but why do you assume that they want to go to Alpha Centauri? Tau Ceti is a sun-like star, so maybe they want to go there specifically, because of that. 100 years isn't that much more than 36.

Possible as in technically following general relativity. Not possible as in being possible to build and use in reality.

@Jason_Wilhelm Wdymw "functioning society"? Part of the reason to leave the solar system (or even galaxy) is to get away from everyone. >And strangely we are close to FTL. FTL is one of the most impossible speculative technologies. Any faster than light drive is a time machine. If that's possible, why isn't it already here?

Imo, it's super implausible to find intelligent life in the same galaxy. Let alone the next star system.

Why the hurry? Even if a spacecraft needs 1000 years to Proxima Centauri, that's super short on geological timescales. And of course it's possible. It's very possible even with current technology. The question is why invest into interstellar missions right now rather than something else.
