  1. Thatcher actually dropped defence spending. By 1982, the Ark Royal carrier was decommissioned, which seriously cut the edge of the task force that went to liberate the Falkland Islands from the Argentinians. The Falkland Islands patrol vessel was cut. Missile systems that should have been introduced were delayed meaning the navy still used outdated systems. If the defence spending stayed the same as when Thatcher came to power in 1979, retaking the Falklands would have been a lot, lot easier. Or more likely the Argentines would not have invaded.
    1
