  1. One of the most efficient in energy gained, more than using water, is "very" heavy weights in old mine shafts. In times of surplus energy (electricity generating organisation pay companies to use electricity at times) the weight is wound up, then released in time of peak demand or during normal demands as the need dictates. They are cheap to construct as the shafts are already there. Abandoned mines are everywhere.
