London and Liverpool resisted very high buildings. London would have had the tallest buildings in the world if they allowed it. Tall buildings need architectural merit. Liverpool does not want to create a wall of glass blocks acting as a barrier between the waterfront and city behind, especially on the south end dock complex. Many proposals had floors chopped off. Liverpool has the Draft Tall Buildings Supplementary Planning Document that will guide the city's Planning Committee on future tall building proposals for at least the next decade. An indicative maximum height of 50 residential storeys in the City Centre Cluster and 25 residential storeys elsewhere throughout the City Centre. They do not like high buildings.

  8. Firstly, Manchester is no Milan or Barcelona. It is a smallish British provincial city not of any real note. I am not insulting Manchester, it is just that way. Manchester has been artificially advanced by government favoritism. The city council constantly big the city up until people go there and are invariably underwhelmed. Liverpool, the only deep water port on that coast, was snubbed in favour of Manchester. The BBC was taken to Manchester, a political decision, when Liverpool had superior, and attractive, dockside locations for construction. Liverpool could not even tender. One third of Liverpool's metro was abandoned under construction when Thatcher came to power - over forty years ago. Miles of tunnels and trackbed still await trains. In the meantime public money was poured into adjacent Manchester, like building its highly extensive Metrolink. HS2 High Speed Rail was planned to terminate at Manchester while there is no direct link at Liverpool 30 miles away. Some of the poorest towns in the UK circle Manchester, like Oldham and Rochdale. No such towns circle Liverpool, with Southport to the north and Chester to the south. Manchester has been promoted by central government, they have no magic entrepreneurial formula to drag the city up by its bootstraps. It is disingenuous to put across that Manchester did it all by itself. It never.

  10.  @lunino4374  Gtr Manchester has a bigger footprint than Merseyside. Merseyside was to be the same size as Greater Manchester, but cut by London. Extend Liverpool out to the same area they are about the same population. Manchester thinks it is a Munich or Barcelona. It is a forgettable provincial city. There is not even a building that stands out. Mancunians need a reality check.
